West Brom have sacked Eric Ramsay after just 44 days in charge at the Hawthorns. The 34-year-old was appointed head coach on a two-and-a-half-year deal on 11 January following the departure of Ryan Mason but has failed to win any of his nine matches.

West Brom decided to make the call after they drew 1-1 with Charlton at home on Tuesday, with the Baggies languishing in 21st place in the Championship, just a point above the drop zone. Ramsay’s side were booed off after the match, with the head coach and his assistant Dennis Lawrence then summoned to meet with the club owner and chairman, Shilen Patel, in the boardroom.

A club statement read: “West Bromwich Albion have parted company with men’s first team head coach Eric Ramsay. Assistant head coach Dennis Lawrence has also departed the Hawthorns. First-team coach James Morrison will oversee first-team affairs on an interim basis. The club would like to place on record its thanks to Eric and Dennis and wishes them well for the future.”

Ramsay’s brief stint set a new club record for the shortest permanent managerial reign in West Brom’s history, surpassing the previous record of 17 games jointly held by Pepe Mel and Tony Mowbray.

The former Manchester United coach had made the step up from Minnesota United in MLS to become Albion’s head coach but could not inspire his side to victory in his eight league matches and also saw West Brom knocked out of the FA Cup by Norwich.
