Trailing 3-2 from last week’s first leg at Old Trafford, United always faced an uphill task but they gave themselves hope with one of their best performance in recent weeks, but Bayern, backed by a vibrant 25,000-strong crowd, never trailed on aggregate across the entire tie and there was an air of inevitability about their late breakthrough. Barcelona almost certainly await them in the last four, as they lead Real Madrid 6-2 on aggregate before Thursday’s second leg in Catalonia.

That is all from me but fear not, the football continues. Chelsea v Arsenal kicks off at 8pm BST and you can follow along with Will Unwin.

Maya Le Tissier speaks to Disney+:

I am fuming, to be fair. Two set pieces, it seems every game we get knocked out on set pieces. Same thing in the FA Cup.

We fully beleived we could go on and win so everyone is dissapointed.

Bayern upped their energy in the second half, and we didn’t match it. I don’t know why. We give all our energy to every game and this is the Champions League. Deep down we can be proud, this is our first appearance in the Champions League [proper]. We have made history.

The Bayern Munich players are all bouncing up and down, celebrating with their fans. Linda Dallmann has got ahold of bullhorn and is having an absolute blast. This is the team’s first semi-final in this competition since 2020-21.

The United players and staff and all huddled together in a circle, looking understandably disappointed. They played well for at least an hour tonight but eventually, the Bayern pressure was too strong.

The damage was done in the first leg with those Pernille Harder runs in behind the defence and her two goals in that 3-2 win last week. It has been a strong campaign from United in Europe but their journey ends here. They were second best overall across the two legs, I think that’s fair to say. Albeit, it was close.

90+4 min: United struggling to get sustained possession of the ball.

90+2 min: Le Tissier gets booked for a foul on Dallmann. It is quite soft.

90 min: Four minutes of added time. Can United score a quick double like their opponents have?

90 min: Ballisager comes on for Gwinn. All about game management for the hosts now.

87 min: Miyazawa lets it fly! She shoots from distance and Mahmutovic just tips it over. The referee fails to spot the touch though and United are denied a corner.

86 min: Bayern make a change with Caruso coming on for Simon. United then make a double change with Turner and Lundkvist coming off for George and Schüller.

83 min: Bayern are energised after that goal from their captain. Manchester United really need to go for it now. They have seven minutes plus added time. Bayern win another corner …

79 min: José Barcala yet to make a substitution … Tanikawa has a shot blocked by Turner and Bayern win another corner.

78 min: Bayern win a free-kick on the left. Tullis-Joyce makes the claim, not before taking out her own player. Everyone is up on their feet and OK, though.

The home fans are really not happy with the referee Tess Olofsson. They’re hissing and booing, feeling they should have had multiple penalties. It’s getting tense.

73 min: Gwinn creates the space for herself, cuts inside and shoots but Turner falls on the ball. Bayern want a penalty for handball but Turner lifted her arms to really clear the avoidance of doubt. Bayern doing everything right except score.

68 min: Pinball in the penalty area after Tanikawa recieves the ball in the box from Amani. The ball falls to Harder but she can’t control it after a challenge Naalsund, which the referee deems fair.

66 min: Bayern still enjoying almost all of the possession but they are not doing much with it.

63 min: Awujo wins a foul near the halfway line and that will be her last action of the night as she comes off for Naalsund.

62 min: Another Bayern corner – I have lost count at this point – but Simon’s delivery has too much power on it. United clear.

61 min: Boos ring out as the referee determines that Kett fouls Le Tissier in the United box.

59 min: Tullis-Joyce spills once, twice, three times but somehow Bayern can’t find the back of the net and the United defenders save their keeper’s blushes.

59 min: Close! Tanikawa with a beautiful backheel to find Harder but Le Tissier is stuck to her like glue and Bayern have to settle for a corner.

57 min: Harder receives the ball on the right but her pass is poor and it goes straight out.

57 min: Stanway tries her luck from distance with a low, arrowing shot but it’s wide.

54 min: Harder latches onto a loose ball, rolls Le Tissier and shoots and Tullis-Joyce quickly snaps her feet together and blocks it with her legs. Big save!

52 min: Another Bayern corner – their fifth of the half – and it is the worst of the lot so far. Miyazawa, who is hardly the tallest player on the pitch, heads it away.

49 min: Bayern are already flooding far more players forward in this second half. It may be a long night of defending for United. Bayern win another corner by putting the pressure on … Close! Tullis-Joyce punches it away but Gilles is now arguing with the referee. She thinks she has been pushed but the referee waves her away and VAR agrees.

47 min: Stanway pushes on and wins a corner. It has been a quiet night for her so far. Simon takes the corner and it flies off the head of Le Tissier at the near post. Another corner … this time at the far post and Tullis-Joyce punches it away.

46 min: We are back at the Allianz Arena. Can United keep up the intensity with only four outfield players on their bench? Time to find out.

An air of nervousness is creeping into this stadium now as the home fans start to worry about extra time or worse. Manchester United have performed superbly so far. Will they tire in the second half? Almost certainly, after Saturday’s draining loss to Manchester City. But this tie is there for the taking.

43 min: Another Bayern corner and this time Rolfö markes Gilles. United deal with the danger but Harder has a word with the referee after she tumbles into the box. There is a 0.2sec VAR check but replay shows there was nothing in it.

42 min: Miyazawa with a great cross to Rolfö, whose header lacks power. Ultimately, an easy save.

40 min: All of Bayern’s attacks are coming from the flanks and they win another corner. Gilles wins the header again and this time it is goalbound and Awujo steps in with a great block. Skinner will certainly be disappointed with these free headers.

36 min: Bayern win a corner and Gilles leaps above everyone for a free header, but it grazes the side netting.

35 min: Kett dribbles into the box and tries to create contact against Le Tissier. She looks towards the referee who is not interested and Le Tissier, who did not stick a leg out, has some words for the Bayern Munich winger.

33 min: Harder with a flicking header after Amani lifts it her way but the striker’s chance lacks power.

31 min: The space opens up for Rolfö and she speeds forward … but she scuffs her shot that leaves much to be desired.

28 min: Park on the right sends a cross in but she mishits it and Mahmutovic has to palm it away as the ball grazes the bar! That would have been a very fortunate second goal.

25 min: Bayern win the ball back and Tanikawa surges forward. She lays it off to Kett but a poor final pass allows United to clear. Harder, who was the star of the show last week, is hardly getting a glimpse of the ball.

21 min: Bayern is commiting players forward which gives United the chance to counter. Malard dances around with the ball and wins a throw-in. The ball is just sticking to her like glue tonight.

20 min: Le Tissier sends in a United corner and it is headed goalwards but well off-target.

17 min: Bayern finally manage an attack. Tanikawa lifts a drifting cross to the far post but there is no red shirt to poke it home.

14 min: Malard again! A great run from her on the left and, with no Bayern player putting any pressure on her, she curls a shot in that is just tipped away by Mahmutovic. The goalkeeper deals with the resulting corner with much more ease.

11 min: Malard takes her chance after some miscommunication in Bayern Munich’s backline and rolls the ball into an empty for her fourth goal in the Champions Leauge this season.

8 min: Park tries to dance her way through but Gilles manages to clear it away for a United corner. Rolfö delivers it into the back post but Bayern head it away.

6 min: Dallmann with a great run on the right and her angled curler forces Tullis-Joyce into a teasing save. The offside flag goes up anyway.

5 min: Chance for United! Great pass from Le Tissier to release Miyazawa in achres of space on the right. She picks out Malard in the middle of the box and her first-time shot forces a diving save from Mahmutovic.

3 min: Long throw from Riviere into the box but Bayern clear the danger. It’s quite early but United are a lot more compact in midfield than in the first leg.

1 min: Bayern Munich attack on the left. Tanikawa with a snazzy flick but then loses the ball to Le Tissier and she fouls the United player in an attempt to win it back.

The teams are out and the Champions League anthem blares out. Less than five minutes until kick-off. Will Manchester United come from behind? Or will Bayern Munich book their spot in the semi-finals?

We are now being treated to a lights show inside the stadium as the Bayern players’ names are read out. The stadium looks nearly half full so it’s a decent turnout from the home fans.

It’s unseasonably cold here in Munich but that is not dampening the mood here among the 400 or so travelling Manchester United fans, many of whom have enjoyed a stein or two in the old town during the day. The Bayern fans, meanwhile, sounded very optimistic, as they caught the U6 train north to the impressive Allianz Arena.

For the visitors, who are missing several senior players through injury, tonight will be an uphill battle, but if they can pull off a shock result, it would rank among the greatest nights in their short history. Probably the greatest.

First leg: A reminder as to how it went down a week ago in Manchester … The Bayern Munich substitute Momoko Tanikawa scored six minutes from time to give her side the win. Twice Pernille Harder had given Bayern the lead only to be pegged back by United, playing at this stage for the first time. However, back from Australia after helping Japan win the Women’s Asian Cup the weekend before, Tanikawa conjured up a beautiful, curling strike into the far corner to ensure a one-goal cushion.

Bayern Munich: And here is José Barcala’s thoughts on his side’s chances to progress to the semi-finals.

We have made a few adjustments and analysed United’s tactics again. But it could be a completely different game; they might change their approach. That’s precisely why it will be extremely important for us to manage the match well. We expect a very aggressive and well-organised opponent.

The presence of the fans will give us tremendous energy and will carry us through difficult phases. This support is the result of the connection this team has built with the fans over the past few years.

Manchester United: Here is what Marc Skinner had to say ahead of his side’s tough ask in Germany.

I believe in this team. The only thing missing [which stopped] Bayern from having a really tough night at Old Trafford was a little bit of composure in the final third. There were two or three passes that we missed that would have created goalscoring opportunities, so we have to sharpen up on that. We know what we have to do [tonight]. We have to come in and silence a fantastic arena with brilliant fans and we have to go and create history.
