The Essendon assistant Simon Goodwin has joined Melbourne’s coaching staff, a move that marks him out as Paul Roos’ successor at the Demons.

“We’ve agreed to a five-year contract with Simon, the first two years as senior assistant coach and then three years as head coach,” said the Melbourne president, Glen Bartlett.

Goodwin had been tipped to take over at his former club Adelaide, following the sacking of Brenton Sanderson but has chosen to join Melbourne instead.

Roos plans to coach the Dees for another two years before handing over control. Goodwin now appears to be the man to step up into his place.

Goodwin said the chance to learn his trade under Roos had played a big part in his decision. “[Melbourne have] got a clear strategy, it’s going to be successful and that’s the path I want to be on,” he said at a press conference held for his unveiling. “I think it’s really healthy to have a long apprenticeship. I don’t think you need to be in any rush to be a senior coach.

“I think every year you go through footy you learn something and another two years [under Roos] certainly won’t hurt.”

Roos said that Goodwin’s appointment made a trong statment about the Dees’ ambition. “Clearly to have someone who’s so sought after to come to our club sends an amazing message to players and fans.”

The Essendon coach, James Hird, said he was sorry to see Goodwin leave the Bombers but believes he has a bright future. “It’s obviously disappointing to lose a talented coach like Simon, but from the moment he walked in the door at Essendon you could tell he had the ability and skills set to be a senior coach,” Hird said in a statement.

“Simon has done a tremendous job developing and strengthening our midfield group, and to a broader extent the football program in his role as senior assistant. Simon will be a great asset for the Melbourne Football Club and I wish him every success.”

Goodwin was one of the AFL best midfielders during his playing career and was named an All-Australian on five occasions. He also filled in as Essendon coach for one game in 2013.
