Shahid Khan has named a five-person “managerial search committee” to help him fill the Fulham post left vacant by Felix Magath’s sacking.
The owner, Khan, retains overall control of recruitment but will “seek counsel from qualified football people from within, close to or outside the Fulham organisation”.
One such person named, Danny Murphy, recently said Magath had shown others how not to run a club. Murphy had seemingly shown interest in the job but joins Brian McBride as one of two former Fulham captains on the committee.
Also involved is Niall Quinn, who briefly attended the club’s academy before signing professional terms with Arsenal. The remaining two members are the academy director, Huw Jennings, and the season-ticket holder David Daly, a senior director at Nike chosen for his “keen understanding of the Fulham culture and professional experience in the world of football”.
“I’ve got the right five men to help us find the right man for Fulham,” Khan said. “They know this is a special job for a manager and they want to play a role in making sure we get this right for everyone who plays for Fulham or loves the club – and we will.”
The caretaker manager Kit Symons, who oversaw Fulham’s first victory of the season at Birmingham, has been told by Khan he is considered a candidate for the role full-time.
However, in his programme notes for the club’s game against Blackburn on 20 September, Khan said: “This will be an exhaustive, thorough and deliberate process. No decisions will be made for the sake of deadlines or convenience. I plan to summon a number of qualified advisors for input, some within or close to the Fulham family and others who will bring a perspective from outside the club.
“The choice will be made with the benefit of excellent and highly respected counsel. This process is already under way and I look forward to tackling the challenge and opportunity ahead.”
