Mexico 2-3 England: World Cup last 16 player ratings

Bellingham was the standout player but Pickford and Gordon were among other fine England performers in a famous win for Tuchel’s team

Mexico

Raúl Rangel Will regret rush of blood that earned England their ultimately decisive penalty. Otherwise dealt with routine tasks. 6

Jorge Sánchez Offered lung-busting support from right-back but struggled when one-on-one against the lively Gordon. 7

César Montes Towering centre-back caused problems at set pieces before departing at the break, seemingly through injury. 6

Johan Vásquez Calm, canny distribution from the back but found England tough to deal with when they asked questions. Booked. 6

Jesús Gallardo Got forward tirelessly and linked well with Quiñones, but let Saka get cross in for crucial opener. 7

Gilberto Mora Local darling produced some lovely turns and had first-half shot blocked. Replaced as Mexico chased game. 6

Érik Lira Metronome in holding midfield position. Engaging battle with Bellingham and could not prevent him finding room for brace. 6

Luis Romo Industrious midfield presence who looked sharp on and off the ball. Wasteful with one first-half strike. 7

Roberto Alvarado Popped up everywhere trying to spark Mexico. Some delicious deliveries and would have had assist but for Pickford. 7

Raúl Jiménez Lethal from spot as usual but will wonder what might have been without two brilliant Pickford saves earlier on. 7

Julián Quiñones Prolific scorer blasted Mexico back into first-half contention. Constant threat with clever runs inside and out. 7

Subs: Edson Álvarez (for Montes, ht) Mexico defence collapsed for a spell after veteran’s introduction. 5; Santiago Gimenez (for Mora, 61) Attacker could not find leveller. Injured late on. 6; Brian Gutiérrez (for Romo, 61) Won penalty soon after his arrival. 6; Álvaro Fidalgo (for Sánchez, 79) Tried to pull strings in late push. 6; Guillermo Martínez (for Quiñones, 81) Could not match impact of dangerman he replaced. 5

England

Jordan Pickford Huge early save from Jiménez turned out to be pivotal. Backed it up with another flying stop later. 8

Jarell Quansah Solid enough until his night, and England’s bright start to second half, went to pot with idiotic dismissal. 4

Ezri Konsa Uncertain display, losing Jiménez for first-half headers and defending loosely for Quiñones’s goal. Later moved to right-back. 5

Marc Guéhi Grew into the game as it went on, relishing chance to lead rearguard action. One phenomenal late challenge. 7

Nico O’Reilly Careless early throw-ins left Tuchel unimpressed but recovered well, smacking a post before departing as England recalibrated late on. Booked. 6

Elliot Anderson Tasked with looking after Mora and largely handled the prodigy well. Tenacity played a part in Bellingham’s second goal. 7

Declan Rice Steady, largely conservative display perhaps tempered by early booking. But bursting 60-yard run opened the door for England. 7

Bukayo Saka Sluggish, sometimes sloppy start but showed up with delightful cross for the opener. Sacrificed for Stones after red card. 7

Jude Bellingham A supreme display. Dialled in from the start, bust a gut to score twice and goal-saving challenge denied Mexico parity. 9

Anthony Gordon Excellent performance at both ends. Won England’s penalty, had beating of Sánchez and tracked back until the end. 8

Harry Kane Delivered yet again with emphatic penalty. Unselfish assist for second goal, led from front and got away with own spot-kick concession. 7

Subs: John Stones (for Saka, 57) Calm head in three-man backline late on. 7; Dan Burn (for Anderson, 75) Booming headers and blocks after introduction. 8; Djed Spence (for O’Reilly, 74) Did enough as deputy left-back. 6; Morgan Rogers (for Kane, 90) No scope to make significant impact. 6
