American cyclist Ezra Caudell remains hospitalized with “multi-system trauma” after being seriously injured in a crash during Sunday’s Philadelphia Cycling Classic, his team said on Tuesday.
The 19-year-old Modern Adventure Pro Cycling rider was involved in a collision with Belgium’s Milan Menten of Lotto-Intermarché early in the men’s race. Caudell was knocked unconscious in the crash and both riders were taken to local hospitals for treatment, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Modern Adventure posted an update on Caudell’s condition to social media on Tuesday evening, two days after the accident.
“Ezra remains hospitalized and is actively receiving care for multi-system trauma he sustained as a result of his crash at the Philadelphia Cycling Classic,” the team said.
“He has an incredible team working diligently and family at his bedside. We are grateful for the thoughts and ongoing outpouring of support.”
No further details were provided about the nature of Caudell’s injuries or his prognosis.
Philadelphia mayor Cherelle Parker said after Sunday’s race that city officials were monitoring the condition of two cyclists who had required hospital treatment after the crash.
“City first responders, including our Fire Department, on-site medical personnel, and my leadership team responded immediately to the incident, and I am grateful for their service,” Parker said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with both cyclists, their families and teams.”
Lotto-Intermarché have not publicly provided details about Menten’s condition.
Caudell has emerged as one of the most promising young American road cyclists. The Georgia native finished fourth in the under-23 road race at the US national championships in June before placing seventh against the country’s leading professionals in the elite men’s road race the following day.
The teenager has also gained experience in Europe this season. He was the youngest rider in the field at Paris-Roubaix in April, finishing 121st in his debut at the celebrated one-day classic, and also competed at the Arctic Race of Norway and Tour of Denmark.
Caudell rides for Modern Adventure Pro Cycling, the American team founded by former Tour de France stage winner George Hincapie. His teammate Ben Oliver finished seventh in Philadelphia on Sunday.
The Philadelphia Cycling Classic returned last weekend after a decade-long absence, reviving one of the best known races in American cycling. The course took riders through central Philadelphia and along the Schuylkill river before the traditional climb through Manayunk.
