How many more teams can he hamper?

I’m on Nations League duty tomorrow night and I can’t wait for this one, one of the best games in international football even without the special context of the new managers.

Chelsea will definitely improve when their injured players are back, and should have Lauren James involved when Arsenal visit this weekend. If they were to lose that and City were to win at Charlton, they’d be five points off the pace with only four games played.

It’s long been odd that it’s allowed at rugby but not football. In the posh seats, they let you take an opaque cup, which I guess is typical of how football works.

Wieke Kaptein says it was a tough game and FAK put pressure on them, but they made it hard for themselves by not scoring when they ought to have done. The last 10 minutes “were like a fighting 10 minutes” and they stuck together which is good, but they should keep the ball better.

On her goal, she says she’s been told to shoot more often, so she did.

90 min Chelsea are getting away with one here; they were dominant until Walsh went off, but thereafter, they’ve been far too easy to penetrate and far too profligate when attacking.

89 min Schiechtel bundles forward and, when the ball is cleared as far as Pfattner, she shoots from the edge … straight at Peng, and Chelsea survive again. After which Sisic is booked for coming back on without permission.

She needs space in front of her, not to play on the half-turn or up against a defender; against two centre-backs, she might be able to attack space in behind, but FAK’s three have coped with her pretty comfortably. 79 min A double change for FAK, Sisic and Cordes on for Schoffel and Uka. I’m not really sure why, though – Schoffel has played well and Uka has been arguably the most dangerous attacker on the pitch.

76 min Potzl runs at Buurman but doesn’t trust her pace, instead checking inside. Then, when she’s tackled, the ball breaks to Jakobsen, to pokes into the box for Uka, who shifts it inside, shoots low … and hits the foot of the far post! FAK have been the better side since about the half-hour mark and though Chelsea have had chances to make the game safe, it’s the visitors who’ve come closer to scoring since Kaptein’s scorcher.

First of all, that would be like calling Arsenal ‘London”’ but more importantly, there is a club actually called “First Vienna Football Club” (sic), that is referred to as ‘Vienna’. Yeah, I wondered about calling them Vienna, I’m afraid because of Rapid, but I’d call them “Rapid” so I guess I thought it a little like calling Real Madrid “Madrid” and Atletico Madrid “Atletico”. But consider me telt.

72 min Chelsea are looking nasty down the right and Kaptein lifts over the top and into space for Carpenter, who stands up a cross. Nusken might head it and has time to take it down, but instead she volleys … over the top.

70 min Oooh, but Buurman dallies inside her own box and Uka puts her under, Wenninger picking up the loose ball and does McCabe foul her as she dashes by? I think she might but it breaks to Uka, whose shot is blocked by Potter, than Jakobsen has a dig … and Peng saves! Chelsea are very, very lucky to get away with that.

69 min Another free-kick to Vienna – will Chelsea come to regret conceding so many? – Uka swinging in, but again, it’s cleared.

67 min Chelsea don’t look invulnerable but they’re creating again, a cunning triangle down the right between Carpenter, Nusken and Hamano freeing the former, whose low cross is shoved away by Pal … and there’s no one arriving into the box on the far side.

66 min Change for Vienna, Jakobsen on for Pfanner, in time for another Uka free-kick. Again, though, Pal gets it away then, when the ball comes back from the other side, she holds.

65 min Ball out to Hamano, who leaves it for Thompson, and she has look, then dribbles a shot towards the near post which Pal saves easily.

63 min I’ve been really impressed with Vienna tonight, though we have to remember Chelsea are without various top players, James, Cuthbert and Beevor-Jones among them, then lost Walsh to injury.

60 min Buchanan finds Thompson who finds Baltimore, and she spreads to Carpenter, the ball left for her by Nusken who, when fed down the right, backheels a lovely return pass. So Carpenter collects again and, with everyone drawn towards the second six-yard box, pulls a clever pass across the box to Kaptein … whose shot is straight at Pal. That was a really good chance ands, when Kaptein picks up the rebound and finds Baltimore, the shot is blocked.

59 min McCabe clears the corner behind at the front post, so Uka will go again and this time, he delivery, under the bar, forces Peng to punch clear, which she does well and Chelsea counter…

58 min Potter slices a clearance behind for a corner, and Vienna really need to score while the going’s good. They’ve been really impressive the last half-hour or so.

56 min Vienna win a free-kick 40 yards from goal, left-hand side … which Uka bends into Peng’s arms. The visitors are the better side currently, and I wonder if Bompastor will introduce Bronze to calm things down.

54 min Hamano intercepts a pass into midfield and finds Thompson, racing forward for the return, but pal is alive to the danger, out quickly to gather.

53 min Vienna are pushing, Potzl finding Hanshaw, whose cross is bundled behind for a goalkick.

52 min Uka shoots into the wall, then tries to get at Buchanan on the outside, only to lose the physical battle.

52 min Here come Vienna again with Potzl; McCabe shoves her, is booked, and Chelsea must now defend a free-kick 23 yards out, right of centre…

50 min Pfattner picks up a loose ball in midfield and sends Schoffel, who makes good grounds down the right, then falls when the time comes to cross or shoot.

50 min Baltimore out to Thompson, now on the left, and she squares up Wenninger, finds a shooting lane, and curves her finish into Pal’s midriff.

49 min The League Cup game is over, Man United beating Sheffield United 10-1.

47 min Hamano has gone to the right wing with Thompson moving into the middle. I’m interested to see how that works – I wonder if playing centrally might negate the American’s speed but, on the other hand, if she beats her marker, she’ll be in on goal.

46 min We go again. Chelsea bring on Hamano for Malard.

Half-time reading: not football, but this is excellent, containing so many nuggets of insight about how hard boxing is.

44 min Chelsea could do with half-time, not words I particularly supposed to type 15 minutes ago. But they’ve got a bit ragged since Walsh went off, losing control of midfield, and aren’t feeding Thompson as often as they should.

42 min Here come Vienna again, Potzl running at Buchanan and shooting into her legs, winning a corner … which comes to nowt.

40 min After a quiet period, Vienna are coming back into this, Schoffel, coming off the flank to glide across Kaptein then Potter, catches Peng with an early shot, hit from 20 yards, right of centre, and swinging out but heading for the bottom corner … before slipping just wide. That’s a great effort and another warning for Chelsea.

37 min I’m quite liking Katie McCabe at left centre-back. Terry Venables always liked a full-back in one of the wide positions when playing a three because he wanted the pace and ability on the ball, and McCabe offers that.

36 min In the women’s League Cup, Man United lead Sheffield United 9-0 with about 15 minutes to go.

34 min Uka was meant to be the talent of Vienna’s outfit and she’s proving it tonight.

32 min Uka goes short to Pfattner, accepts the return, and the cross is a goodun, Peng shovelling it back into play and, with the keeper on the ground, Kirchberger has an empty net … but she shoots over! That’s as good a chance as Vienna are getting, and it really should be 1-1.

31 min Vienna win a throw deep inside the Chelsea half and Schoffel hurls long … so Potter slices behind.

30 min Vienna started positively but Chelsea have taken over. Still, as long as it stays 1-0, they’re in the game.

28 min Lovely little triangle down the Chelsea left, Malard back to McCabe, into Baltimore and inside to Malard, who looks for a low curler to the far post … but can’t get quite enough draw.

27 min Vienna just can’t control Alyssa Thompson. Chelsea need to get her the ball whenever possible and have Malard attack the front post with Baltimore dropping off for the cut-back.

25 min Carpenter feeds Thompson on the touchline and she burst inside Hanshaw then outside Weiss, an electric eel. She might cross, but opts to shoot … her effort scooshing just past the far post.

23 min Thompson is the outlet once more, attacking space then finding Nusken, who should allow it across her body and shoot but instead looks for Baltimore, her pass intercepted and the opportunity lost.

21 min Malards fights for the ball on the edge and Nusken, coming back from an offside position, turns around the corner to Carpenter, who’s slow to hit her shot, stabbing wide of the near post.

20 min Uka clips Buchanan’s heels and for a second it looks like she’s in, but as the ball runs away, the whistle goes.

19 min Bad news for Chelsea: Keira Walsh is going off injured. It’s not clear what’s up butm as Emma Burn points out, no one’s asking her what the matter is, which suggests a pre-existing issue. Lexi Potter comes on.

18 min A ball from Nusken into Malard, who turns around the corner and down the line for Thompson, who wins the race to it, feints inside then nips outside, lovely play … but there’s no one in the box attacking her cross. Still, she looks dangerous.

17 min The goal came just as Chelsea were finding space between the lines, but Vienna look like they might have one in them too; I’m just not sure they’ll be able to refrain from conceding another while they seek it.

16 min McCabe goes near post again, and this time the ball is bundled behind for a goalkick.

15 min Now Chelsea win a corner, McCabe delivering to the front post, where Pal does just enough to flap behind for another.

14 min Vienna come straight back – they’re looking to attack whenever possible – and win a corner, which picks out Schiechtl at the back of the box. Her header isn’t bad, but it’s loopy and passes just wide and just high of the far angle.

11 min Vienna will be relatively happ…

9 min Chelsea probe, then Buurman decides to gambol forward … before a poor touch cedes possession. That’s very careless.

7 min It’s a bit slow from Chelsea so far, Peng seeking to bait the press by exchanging passes with Buchanan. It doesn’t work, though, the ball again given away cheaply, except i kind of does because when Vienna spring, Chelsea counter on them, Thompson bouncing down the right and cutting back for Kaptein, who can’t quite sort her feet out, the tame sidefooted finish straight at Pal.

5 min But then Walsh gives it away and Vienna spring, Uka shooting from distance … straight at Peng.

4 min Vienna attack down the right and Potzl wins a corner off Walsh … but the delivery is poor and Chelsea being the ball away.

3 min Chelsea knock it about, while Vienna sit in shape, engaging once the ball comes into their half. But McCabe still finds Nusken between the lines pretty easily, but the subsequent pass is poor.

2 min “My son and I are on our way home from watching our beloved Servette come face to face with the crushing reality of football at the top table, writes Jez Smith. “Anyway, we reckon we found the person with most boring job in football: watching the empty seats at the match.”

Maybe he couldn’t face any more. But I’m also sure watching the seats is more fun than watching Louis van Gaal’s Man United.

So where is the game? I imagine Vienna will defend deep and in numbers – with five strung out across the back, they’ll be hard to get around or through. So Chelsea will, I think, look to move the ball quickly and hit big switches, with Nusken and Walsh looking to thread Malard through, and Kaptein making third-person runs.

Bompastor talks about her team needing to be more ruthless, citing a lack thereof even before she became manager. She wants her team to be focused in the big moments, and that’s about it.

In Leuven, Roma have just been awarded a penalty that’s an absolute nonsense, the ball headed back into the arm of a player a yard or two away and looking in the opposite direction. “Shitty” is the verdict of whichever Van Dongen twin said it.

In the studio, Tyra Mills is wearing a trackie that looks like the last word in comfort. Would wear.

Malard, the summer signing from Man United, scored off the bench at the weekend, and I’m looking forward to seeing how she does tonight. With Beevor-Jones soon to be fit, there’s competition for her place, so this is a chance for her to assert herself.

I’m not sure we’ll see Chelsea play 3-5-2 that often this season. It makes sense tonight because Vienna are playing it and, if teams match up, the better one tends to win; it also make sense given the players Sonia Bompastor has available.

Against Birmingham at the weekend, Chelsea set up in a 3-4-3 and there are three changes made to that XI: in net, Livia Peng replaces Hannah Hampton; at the back, Katie McCabe is on for Lucy Bronze; and up front, Melvine Malard comes in, with Wieke Kaptein dropping into midfield and Lexi Potter dropping to the bench.

I’m going to write these down, then we’ll take a closer look at what might come to pass. In the meantime, though, elsewhere it’s Leuven 0-0 Roma and Servette 0-7 Lyon, with just under 70 minutes gone.
