Match report
I’ll leave you with Suzanne Wrack’s report. Until next time …
When you’re named player of the match, but your team threw away a two-goal lead … Georgia Stanway nails the facial expression.
Chelsea face Lyonnes in a big league-phase game, kicking off shortly. Tom Garry is at the Groupama Stadium.
That Arsenal result seems to have gone down very well with the travelling Chelsea fans here in Lyon, where tonight brings about lots of friendly reunions for the Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor. A winner of this competition with the French side as both a player and a manager, she is seemingly still a popular figure here. This is her first trip back to face her former club since taking over at Chelsea in the summer of 2024.
I’m afraid to report there isn’t much atmosphere inside this approximately 60,000-seater stadium – which hosted the 2019 Women’s World Cup final – yet though, as the blocks behind both goals are empty and the fans on the far side are mainly occupying the lower tier. The attendances here in this competition are usually a bit stronger in the knockout stages, but the League Phase clearly hasn’t quite captured the enthusiasm of the locals just yet.
The penalty incident was very similar to one that befell Aston Villa in the men’s Champions League. I do think a penalty is a harsh punishment for what is essentially a misunderstanding, but the frustrating thing for Arsenal is that Williamson didn’t need to handle the ball anyway.
It finished Roma 0-6 Barcelona, Claudia Pina adding her second before Ewa Pajor got on the scoresheet. Elsewhere, Juventus racked up a 3-0 victory over Häcken in Sweden.

Alessia Russo is asked: did she see that late leveller coming? No, is the obvious answer.
“It’s a mistake, unfortunately … but we let them back into the game before then. I’m really happy to have scored, it’s a tough moment, but we have to keep building on Sunday (against Manchester City) and in the rest of our Champions League games.”

Full time! Paris FC 2-2 Arsenal
It’s all over, and Arsenal have let a two-goal lead slip, defensive errors and a comical penalty costing them dear. It’s a draw on the road that will feel like a defeat.
Updated
92 mins: Could it get worse for Arsenal? Reynders cuts in from the right and shoots, winning Paris a corner … but nothing comes of it.
90 mins: There will be four minutes of added time. Can Arsenal rescue a win despite that embarrassing error for the penalty?
89 mins: Frida Maanum climbs to meet a cross, but her header is straight at Chavas.
88 mins: Slegers throws on Caitlin Foord and Stina Blackstenius for Russo and Baum.
GOAL! Paris FC 2-2 Arsenal (Mendy pen 86')
There are plenty of Arsenal protests, but the penalty stands after a VAR check, and Maeline Mendy buries the spot kick. Misa goes the right way but unable to keep it out.

Penalty to Paris FC!
Sacré bleu – Paris FC have a penalty in bizarre circumstances after Leah Williamson handles the ball in the area! Misa retrieved it from behind the goal and passed it to the centre-back, who placed it with her hands for a goal kick. The referee rules that Misa’s pass made the ball live, so it’s a handball!
Updated
84 mins: Maanum has a speculative shot from distance, easily saved by Chavas. Still, only five minutes plus change for Arsenal to hold on.
82 mins: Arsenal win a free kick in a dangerous spot, out wide on the right – but Smith’s cross towards the far post is cleared away.
80 mins: Sandrine Soubeyrand makes her last two changes, with Mateo and Liaigre going off. Costa Rica’s Sheika Scott and Manoly Baquerizo of Ecuador come on.
79 mins: Holmberg gets the better of Mateo on the right and crosses towards Smith, who should maybe have done better with her header at the far post.
Updated
77 mins: Paris FC keep pushing, with left-back Liaigre going on a mazy run, before her cross is deflected into Misa’s arms.
76 mins: Mateo glides down the left again, in a similar position to her goal – but this time, Leah Williamson gets across well to intercept.
74 mins: Wubben-Moy tries to make amends, but her header is deflected behind. Paris FC make another change, with the industrious Le Moguedec replaced by Océane Picard.
Updated
Wubben-Moy and Williamson both go to close down Viens, who pokes a well-timed pass out wide to Mateo. Clean through on goal, she rounds Misa Rodriguez and slots it home.
GOAL! Paris FC 1-2 Arsenal (Mateo 72')
Game on! Clara Mateo pulls one back for Paris, and it’s a bad defensive moment for Arsenal.
Updated
“The surname of Arsenal winger Lisa Baum means ‘tree’,” notes Peter Oh. “With (Jurriën) Timber in the men’s side, there’s a pleasingly rustic sturdiness to Arsenal these days.”
68 mins: Two more changes from Renee Slegers, with Smilla Holberg replacing Fox and Frida Maanum on for Stanway.
67 mins: A little reminder for Arsenal here as Korosec gets into space and fizzes a shot just over the bar from 20 yards out.
66 mins: Russo’s backheel finds Ona Batlle in space, but her shot flies high and wide.
65 mins: Smith is stationed on the left as Arsenal switch to what looks like a 4-2-3-1 setup, with Caldentey and Baum moving behind Russo.
64 mins: Williamson deals with the free kick, and when the ball is heaved back upfield, Mateo is caught offside.
62 mins: Paris are enjoying some attacking momentum now, and Stanway is booked for a fairly innocuous trip on Le Moguedec.
Häcken 0-1 Juventus: Juve lead in Sweden thanks to Tatiana Pinto, while Barcelona now lead Roma 4-0, Caroline Graham Hansen getting her second goal of the night.
Updated
59 mins: Korosec lifts in a cross that is half-cleared before Wubben-Moy thunks it away downfield.
58 mins: Two changes for Paris FC, new signing Hillary Diaz replacing Greboval in central defence and teenage forward Maeline Mendy replacing Toloba.
57 mins: Kim Little goes off for Arsenal, replaced by Olivia Smith.
55 mins: Baum is almost able to latch on to a flick from Stanway – Liaigre does well to get across and block her shot away. Changes coming up …
Roma 0-3 Barcelona: The holders add another goal in Rome, Claudia Pina the scorer.
52 mins: The Paris defence are being stretched repeatedly now, with Greboval getting a vital boot to clear with Stanway lurking, before Fox’s cross is cleared behind by N’Dongala.
Updated
That is Georgia Stanway’s first competitive goal for Arsenal, a just reward for her attacking efforts and Arsenal’s positive start to the second half.
GOAL! Paris FC 0-2 Arsenal (Stanway 50')
Fox’s cross bounces into Stanway’s path, and she chests it down before smashing home a volley from close range!
Updated
49 mins: Stanway finds space in the area but her shot is well blocked by Greboval, with Caldentey not quite able to pounce on the rebound.
47 mins: Arsenal win an early corner, but it’s well claimed by Chavas in the Paris FC goal.
Second half
We’re back under way in Paris. No changes for either side yet.
Half-time reading:
Half time: Paris FC 0-1 Arsenal
I’m not entirely sure how, but Arsenal lead at the break despite some wobbly moments in defence. Can they get the job done? We’ll find out.
45 mins: Paris FC hit the bar! Into one minute of added time and Viens springs the Arsenal offside trap, racing on to Mateo’s pass and drilling her shot against the bar! The flag went up, but replays show that was the wrong call, so VAR would have awarded the goal (probably). Misa might have got a touch, too – in which case, that’s an incredible save.
Updated
44 mins: Having laboured to get that first goal, Arsenal are pushing for a second with Russo and Little causing problems for the home defence, who just about clear their lines …
Roma 0-2 Barcelona: The visitors double their lead in Rome, thanks to an own goal from Shukurat Oladipo, who turned Hansen’s cross into her own net under pressure.
Updated
43 mins: Russo has another go from the edge of the area, but it’s comfortable for Chavas. The away fans have stopped biting their nails and are merrily singing about Spurs again.
Arsenal tried to break away from Paris FC’s corner, quickly got bogged down but held on to the ball and waited. Stanway found Russo, who held off two defenders, turned and fired low inside the near post – a finish reminiscent of another England striker, Harry Kane.
Updated
GOAL! Paris FC 0-1 Arsenal (Russo 40')
Arsenal really needed a moment of quality, and Alessia Russo has provided it to open the scoring!
39 mins: More space in behind the Arsenal defence, with Viens running on to a through ball and forcing a well-timed challenge from Williamson.
38 mins: Stanway tries to unlock the low block with a scooped ball over the top towards Kim Little, who can’t quite connect with an outstretched boot.
36 mins: Ona Batlle collects a long ball and drives forward, only to misplace her pass. That allows the hosts to break, but Viens makes a similar error when looking for a teammate.
34 mins: Baum turns beyond Mateo and whips in a left-footed cross from the right – but it flies into Chavas’ arms.
32 mins: Arsenal win another corner, which is confidently claimed by Paris keeper Mylene Chavas.
31 mins: Caldentey is able to continue, but can’t help her defence as Paris FC break at pace again – but Toloba shoots high and wide with options available to her.
29 mins: An injury worry for Arsenal, as Caldentey goes down holding her left ankle. She’s going off for treatment as her teammates take a moment to regroup.
27 mins: Viens picks the ball up in the Arsenal area, but loses control before teammates can get forward to support her.
Roma 0-1 Barcelona: Caroline Graham Hansen has put the holders ahead in Italy with a lovely solo run and finish.
Updated
26 mins: Lisa Baum, probably Arsenal’s brightest attacking spark so far, tries to cut beyond left-back Liaigre but runs out of space.
25 mins: A better delivery this time, and Russo sends a header bouncing across goal … but wide of the far post.
24 mins: Stanway takes a corner, which is out-swinging but out-swings all the way across the penalty area. They get another, though, when Chavas fails to keep the ball in play from a back-pass.
22 mins: It’s been an unconvincing start for Arsenal, who are struggling to undo Paris’ low block and looking a little vulnerable on the break.
20 mins: Another opening for the hosts as Evelyne Viens gallops in behind the Arsenal defence, but sends her shot from an angle straight at Misa, who shoulders it away.
Updated
19 mins: Arsenal win a free kick which Baum lifts into the area towards Williamson, who can’t make a clean connection.
17 mins: A warning for Arsenal here, as Paris right-back N’Dongala gets forward and drills in a cross that just evades Viens and Mateo in the middle.
15 mins: Another tussle between Stanway and Le Moguedec, who stays down holding her ankle after slipping on the turf. She looks to be OK to continue, for now.
12 mins: Stanway is penalised for a foul on Le Moguedec in midfield, and has a few words for the referee.
10 mins: That creates a chance for Paris to counter, with captain and key threat Clara Mateo picking the ball up on the left … but her pass inside is intercepted.
9 mins: Emily Fox wins the ball in midfield, moves forward and sees her long-range shot closed down …
7 mins: Arsenal win another corner and play it short, before Cooney Cross’ ball into the middle bobbles through the penalty area.
5 mins: Lisa Baum lifts a useful cross towards Caldentey, who can’t get enough power on her header from an awkward angle.
3 mins: Arsenal earn an early corner, but the hosts are able to clear it away comfortably.
2 mins: Mariam Toloba bursts forward down the left for Paris FC, and her near-post effort is saved and held by Misa.
Kick-off
We are under way at the Stade Jean-Bouin, where the away fans are making themselves heard early on.
There are a couple of other 7.45pm kick-offs, with Barcelona taking on the Italian champions, Roma, while Juventus visit Swedish title-winners Häcken. We’ll endeavour to keep you updated on those games, too.

ESPN and Disney+ have copped plenty of flak for their pre-game show, The Hangout, which launched before the first round of games. Judging by tonight, they’ve made things feel a little more professional (there’s no dog this time) and the guests know their stuff even if they are – gasp! – content creators. There have been technical troubles with the pitchside reporters, though.
Renée Slegers makes just two changes from the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea, with Misa Rodriguez in goal ahead of Anneke Borbe, while Lotte Wubben-Moy replaces Steph Catley in defence. Catley, like Chloe Kelly, is injured and did not travel for the game.

Preamble
One, zero, one, one, zero – that is Arsenal’s scoring record in five games this season, the Gunners devoid of their usual firepower. Their Champions League opener ended in a fortunate late win over Danish part-timers Køge, but today’s opposition represent a significant step up.
Paris FC edged out PSG to finish second in the French top tier last season, and gave Barcelona a scare in their first game, even if the defending champs did eventually run out 5-2 winners. Arsenal will face Barça and Lyonnes later in this league phase amid a tough domestic fixture list, so tonight would be a good time to rediscover their attacking form.
Kick-off at the Stade Jean Bouin in Paris is at 5.45pm (BST) – stay tuned for all the team news and pre-match chat.
