Jimmy White's eventful Embassy World Championship campaign was ended today by Welshman Matthew Stevens at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

The 24-year-old, who held a 6-2 overnight lead, dropped just one frame on his way to a comfortable 13-3 win and a place in the quarter-finals.

The day started with an apology from White following his petulant act in the final frame of last night's first session.

The six-time runner-up was frustrated after missing a simple shot and smashed the cue ball into the black, sending both balls spinning off the table.

White immediately conceded the frame, but was quick to apologise to his fans and his opponent today.

White said in a statement: "I would like to apologise for the way I reacted at the end of the first session of my second round match against Matthew Stevens.

"It was caused by sheer frustration and was completely out of character."

Following last night's drama, White looked subdued at the start of morning session and immediately missed a long red at the start of the ninth frame.

Stevens capitalised on the mistake with a 91 break to open up a five-frame lead. The Welshman also won the next two frames as White struggled to find his form.

However, White produced a fine shot to split the reds in the 12th and a well-constructed break of 51 reduced the deficit to six frames.

It was a timely boost for White before the mid-session interval - but Stevens regained control in the 13th frame.

Breaks of 41 and 34 moved Stevens within three frames of victory and he clinched the next with superb break of 105.

The Carmarthen professional had victory in his sights and a break of 63 gave him a 12-3 lead.

Both players squandered good opportunities during the 16th frame, but it was Stevens who held his nerve to secure the win.
