The predicted exodus of leading players from South Africa started yesterday when the internationals Pieter Rossouw and Robbie Kempson announced they were moving to Europe.

There have been suggestions that up to 24 South African players on Super 12 contracts are seeking to join foreign sides after the collapse of the rand and because of disquiet over the quota system imposed by the government on sport in their country.

The 30-year-old wing Rossouw, who has won 42 caps, has signed a two-year contract with London Irish where his duties will extend to the coaching side. Kempson, 28, a prop and veteran of 31 Tests, is joining Ulster.

"I hope that this move does not mean the end of my international career," said Rossouw. "I will always be available for the Springboks if they want to pick me but it made sense for me to look beyond South Africa after my national contract was not renewed earlier this year."

Like Rossouw, Kempson is being released from his contract with Western Province.
