Wasps will share Adams Park with Wycombe Wanderers next season after the local district council last night gave its qualified support for their proposed ground share.
The council confirmed that the Premiership club would be allowed to share with the Second Division football club provided the two parties could put forward an agreed "green transport plan" to reduce the number of cars attending matches.
The Wasps board of directors are in favour of using Adams Park as their new ground for at least two seasons, rather than accepting an offer of a switch to Oxford United's Kassam Stadium. The club has to leave Loftus Road because Fulham are moving in as tenants of Queens Park Rangers while Craven Cottage is being redeveloped.
An initial application was turned down, but the club's new chief executive Alistair McLean last night presented new evidence in favour of the proposals that was accepted by the council.
The decision will be welcomed by the Rugby Football Union, as Rotherham had been denied promotion to the Premiership because their own ground was deemed unacceptable. The RFU was accused of double standards in allowing Wasps to end the season without a new home in place.
Having given the club dispensation to play at Wycombe, the possibility of them moving to Oxford was also causing concern to the club's predominantly London-based fans. Wasps will provide transport from London for fans wishing to follow the club to their new home, and they also expect to attract more support from an area currently without a top-flight club.
