Cristiano Ronaldo's future remains up in the air after the Manchester United winger departed on holiday yesterday. Ronaldo said last week he needed to have an operation on a nagging injury but he will now wait until after his break before a decision on surgery is taken.
The Real Madrid president, Ramón Calderón, yesterday reiterated that his club cannot do anything until United say they are ready to sell. "For a player to say that [he wants to play for Madrid] fills me with pride. But we have to be respectful of those clubs who own players' [registration] rights, in this case United. There is no 'Ronaldo case' because his club do not want to sell. In any case, we would never pay €100m (£79m) for any player."
