Manchester United teenager Federico Macheda says an appearance in the Champions League final against Barcelona in his home city of Rome next week would be the realisation of "my daydream".

"I want it a lot, but I don't even know if I'll be sitting on the bench," the 17-year-old striker told Corriere dello Sport. "Manchester United have many champions and there is a lot of competition. But it would be fantastic even to play one minute."

Macheda, who joined United from Lazio's youth ranks in 2007, said the final's location makes the prospect even more tantalising. "It's a daydream that I've had a lot of times in the last few days," he said. "Me, with the Champions League trophy, in my home stadium – mamma mia! Ponte di Nona wasn't an easy neighbourhood [to grow up in], but in life I learn that you mustn't ever forget who you are and where you come from."

Reports in Italy have linked several Italian clubs with summer moves to take him back to Serie A, but Macheda says he has heard nothing about a possible transfer.

"I have not been contacted – maybe my father was," he admitted. "Will I sign a new deal at United? I don't know anything. My agent is dealing with all of it."
