Scotland need to beat England on Saturday by at least eight points, thereby denying Martin Johnson's side a losing bonus point, to reach the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals. Kenny Logan, who played in the 1995, 1999 and 2003 tournaments, outlines how his compatriots should go about their task in Auckland.

Make a fast start

What we have to do with England is upset them right from the kick-off, make it really tight and then they'll start to panic – if we can make them panic then we've got a chance.

Scotland players don't need to worry about the eight-point gap, they just need to be thinking: "Let's win this game and see what happens."

Score some tries

It may sound obvious but we've got to surprise England by scoring tries. We're not scoring enough. Playing against Romania, at the start I was thinking: "This is looking better," and after five or 10 minutes we looked like we were going to score loads.

But we get ourselves in positions and we fluff it up. We got a great line-break at the weekend against Argentina, yet we go right when there's nobody there instead of going left – that's what gets you frustrated. You know as a rule that if you break the ball from a honey pot then you want to get it away from there as quickly as possible, but we go down the blindside. We can't afford to waste those kind of opportunities against England.

Pressure England's forwards

I'd go after their front row because I believe our front row is as good if not better than theirs.

We have to put pressure on Courtney Lawes, because he's strong; I'd put pressure on Louis Deacon because I don't think he should be in the team – you never see him with the ball in his hand. I'd put pressure on James Haskell, and I'd put pressure on Ben Youngs. He's a great player but he's been out for a while, and sometimes you come back, your first few games are great but then the pace of the game hits you and you start struggling because you're not as fluent as you were.

Drop John Barclay

He's not played very well and you can see it because we've conceded a lot of turnovers, and that's because our No7 just isn't getting there. You can't blame the ball carrier for taking it in and trying to stay on his feet, but it's up to the pack to get there and support him. If we don't then England will probably take advantage, especially with Lewis Moody in their team. Moody does so much good stuff because he'll win every 50-50 ball, even any 80-20 ball in our favour, he wins it.

Stand up and be counted

We rely too much on Chris Paterson. I played with Chris and he's one of the best goal-kickers in the world and he very rarely makes mistakes, but you can't expect him to be there all the time – other people have got to step up. Someone like Ross Ford for example, he's a big man and can really control the game for us. They need to realise that this is a lifeline for Scotland. England could easily have been out of sight with three wins and bonus points, so we need other players to step up and seize their chance.

Kenny Logan will be playing for the Northern Hemisphere at this year's "Heroes Rugby Challenge" match, which aims to raise money for Help the Heroes. The game takes place at Twickenham on 3 December, 4.30pm. Tickets via Ticketmaster or 0844 847 2492.
