Marouane Fellaini has a hand injury which could rule him out of Manchester United games beyond the international break. There are fears that he may have strained ligaments.
The midfielder, whom United signed from Everton for £27.5m on the last day of the summer transfer window, is due to see a hand specialist in Manchester on Monday before joining Belgium's World Cup squad and it is thought he made need surgery.
If so, Fellaini may have to play with a brace when he returns. The United manager, David Moyes, was without the Belgian for Saturday evening's 2-1 win at Sunderland due to the injury.
United trailed for 50 minutes after Sunderland, who are still without a Premier League win this season, took a shock lead.
However, the teenager Adnan Januzaj, another Belgian, capped his full debut for the club with a stunning double to end a run of two successive league defeats.
The victory eased United into the top half of the table, although it was far from convincing as managerless Sunderland turned in a performance of real character until they faded during the second half.
