Jack Colback believes Newcastle United are in “a false position” and that their long-awaited first Premier League victory at home to Leicester City last Saturday can serve as a springboard to success.

With Alan Pardew’s side still in the relegation zone and facing a trip to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday before a home game against Liverpool on Saturday week, many Newcastle fans feel the scrappy 1-0 victory merely represents a crisis averted.

Doubts about Pardew’s future on Tyneside will not be banished too easily but Colback feels he and his team-mates are up to the job. “Everyone wants to be successful here, and I think we are in a false position,” said the central midfielder, who arrived at St James’ Park on a free transfer from Sunderland in the summer.

“The fans deserve better but hopefully this win can set us off and we can win some more games. We have to build on this. It’s been doom and gloom all season but a couple of wins can change the feeling.

“We have to focus on Spurs and hopefully get a win there. It is difficult when you are not winning games, really difficult. It can get hard when you are playing up here, but in fairness to the fans they were top-drawer on Saturday. They stuck with us and we got the win for them.”

If it is to really prove a new dawn, progress has to be seen to be made with cohesion added to fighting spirit. “It has to be a platform to move forward,”Colback said. “It has been tough for the manager but he has kept us positive. It is a relief for the manager to get that win and it will be good for him. In the dressing room he praised our work rate and application and hopefully we can move on now.”
