90 + 1 min: We’re in the first of four minutes of added time, St Mary’s is emptying at a rate of knots and Everton’s travelling support are making all the noise. Perhaps those who hired the plane to fly that banner criticising the board for not spending money over the ground, will instruct the pilot to go up again trailing a message of appreciation for their team’s fine performance.

89 min: Southampton win a corner, which is well defended by James McCarthy at the near post. He clears the ball with a meaty header.

88 min: Everton double-substitution: Gerard Deulofeu and Tyias Browning on for Romaleu Lukaku and Brendan Galloway. Tip of the hat to Lukaku, who along with Seamus Coleman, set up Ross Barkley for Everton’s third goal.

85 min: Steven Naismith goes closing to making it 4-0, finding himself through on goal, staring into the whites of Stekelenburg’s eyes, only to be foiled by a bit of desperate last-ditch defending.

81 min: Good work from Lukaku down the inside right, winning a throw-in for his team deep in Southampton territory.

80 min: Victor Wanyama is teed up beautifully on the edge of the Everton penalty area, but takes two touches, at least one of which was superfluous, before shooting high over the bar. A poor effort.

79 min: Southampton substitution: Steven Davis off, James Ward-Prowse on. Everton substitution: Arouna Kone off, Steven Naismith on.

78 min: Sadio Mane strikes from outside the area, bringing a smart save out of Tim Howard with his swerving shot from 25 yards.

76 min: Southampton advance again, with Cedric on the ball. He curls in a cross from the right, which Phil Jagielka heads clear. Everton’s back four have defended very stoutly today.

75 min: Steven Davis is next into the book, for a foul on James McCarthy on the halfway line.

74 min: Southampton attempt to attack on the break, but Graziano Pelle goes down under a challenge from James McCarthy, who gets booked. That’s a little harsh - Pelle knew the midfielder was about to collar him and basically threw himself into his path.

72 min: Everton win another two corners, but fail to trouble Maarten Stekelenburg unduly, although he does concede the second after making a bit of a pig’s ear of a soft incoming header.

71 min: Southampton substitution: Jay Rodriguez comes on for Shane Long, who has had a quiet afternoon.

68 min: Everton win a corner, moments after Pelle had squandered a half-chance from one Southampton had at the far end. The ball’s swung into the penalty area and Barkley wins another corner for Everton, off Wanyama. It’s one from the training ground, with the ball being played to Coleman on the edge of the penalty area. He attempts to pick out Lukaku, who ends up winning a third consecutive corner off Jose Fonte. There’s a bit of argy-bargy between the pair and Michael Oliver is forced to step in to make the peace. Southampton finally clear their lines.

66 min: From the right side of thye Everton penalty area, Pelle picks out Mane with a splendid back-heel. The Senegalese runs down a blind alley and then attempts a back-heel of his own, but his effort ricochets off a defender and Everton clear.

65 min: The ball’s played long towards Lukaku, down the inside right channel. with Kone and Barkley in the penalty area, he sends in a low cross that goes between the pair of them.

64 min: Southampton continue to pile the pressure on Everton, but to little effect. I’m fairly sure Lukaku hasn’t had a touch of the ball yet in this half.

62 min: Cedric is having his head bandaged and now looks like a second-row forward in a rugby match. Play resumes with a Southampton free-kick from wide on the right and Davis curls the ball in towards Pelle. John Stones is on hand to block his run, so that Tim Howard can come off his line to collect the ball.

60 min: Gareth Barry leaps to contest a high ball with Saints right-back Cedric and catches him with his arm. There’s another break in play as Cedric receives treatment for a blow to the side of his noggin.

59 min: Galloway receives treatment after ROmeu’s clumsy challenge and the game continues. Wanyama plays the ball wide to Mane from the middle of the centre-circle, but his cross is cleared.

56 min: Oriel Romeu collides with Brendan Galloway. In the BT gantry, Robbie Savage thinks he should have received his second yellow card, while Glenn Hoddle thinks he shouldn’t. Former referee Howard Webb says he wouldn’t have given him a second yellow. The debutant needs to be more careful.

55 min: Matt Targett gets past Coleman down the left flank and attempts to drive the ball low and hard across the face of the Everton goal. John Stones controls and clears without fuss. Southampton have been bossing the game for the opening 10 minutes of this second half, but remain two goals behind.

53 min: Southampton are comitting a lot of men forward in their efforts to pull a goal back. In his own penalty are, Seamus Coleman chests the ball directly into the path of Graziano Pelle, who volley is fired straight at Tim Howard from about 14 yards. My compatriot Mr Coleman is not having is one of his better games today.

50 min: Southampton win another corner, which is played short, with Davis prodding it towards Mane. He tries to fire a cross in and wins another corner, which Davies sends into the penalty area. Arouna Kone is back to head clear.

49 min: Oriel Romeu gets booked for a lunge on James McCarthy, just three minutes and 30 seconds into his first Premier League game since 2012. In the BT commentary gantry, Robbie Savage thinks he should have been sent off, while Glenn Hoddle thinks a booking was fair enough.

48 min: There’s an impromptu game of pinball int the Everton penalty area, with Romeu, Pelle andf Long all scrambling around trying to fire off shots. Everton clear courtesy of some desperate defending.

47 min: Oriel Romeu is quick out of the blocks, getting in a cross. Southampton win a corner and Victor Wanyama leaps highest to head towards the unmanned left upright. Wide, but not by a great deal.

45+3 min: Ross Barkley gets needlessly booked for a foul on Mane. Free kick for Saints, wide on the right. Tadic sends the ball into the mixer, where Tim Howard punches clear.

45 min: Lukaku slots the ball past Maarten Stekelenburg with his left foot after running on to a beautifully weighted through ball from Ross Barkley. That’s two from two on the counter-attack from Everton and Ronald Koeman will be furious. Lukaku played the ball to Barkley on the halfway line, continued his run and finished with air of a man whose confidence is sky high.

43 min: With Shane Long and Graziano Pelle waiting in the Everton penalty area, Cedric Soares fluffs a cross into the penalty area, completely over-hitting it.

42 min: Showing wonderful vision, Ross Barkley curls a wonderful forward pass towards Arouna Kone in the Saints penalty area, but Maya Yoshida intervenes and clears. Good pass, good defending.

41 min: Steven Davis ambles into space in the Everton half and picks out Matt Targett, who loses the ball and proceeds to eff and jeff at his own poor touch.

39 min: “That’s twice in two games Southampton have conceded from their own corner - plus Targett getting booked stopping Lukaku last time around,” writes Lee James. “Starting to think it won’t be long until we see Southampton forwards scrambling to make sure it’s only a throw in.”

38 min: Stones is fit to continue - I suspect he was just winded. Once play resumes, Graziano Pelle is booked for dragging out of Seamus Coleman and ending a promising Everton attack.

35 min: John Stones to leap the ball forward, lands awkwardly and stays down. With Everton on the attack, referee Michael Oliver halts play and orders the physio on. They dash on to treat the Chelsea target, posing the kind of existential dilemma that could have Jose Mourinho tying himself in knots.

34 min: From the corner, Victor Wanyama peels off his marker and gets a free header, which he sends over the bar.

34 min: Southampton win a free-kick, which Tadic sends into the penalty area. Gareth Barry puts the ball out for a corner.

32 min: Matt Targett attempts to cross the ball into the Everton penalty area, but his effort deflects off Arouna Kone, back defending in the Everton left-back position, loops up in the air and drops into the safety of Tim Howard’s warm, tender, loving embrace.

31 min: From the left flank, Shane Long curls a cross into the Everton penalty area, which is cleared.

30 min: The rebound from the Stekelenburg save falls for Tom Cleverly, who fires miles wide.

28 min: From just inside the penalty area with only Maarten Stekelenburg in the Southampton goal to beat, Ross Barkley shoots straight at the goalkeeper after picking up a pass from Lukaku. That’s a glorious opportunity and a terrible miss.

25 min: James McCarthy sprints down the right touchline on the overlap, picks up the ball from Lukaku’s backheel and drives inside past Maya Yoshida. He tries to unleash a low, hard cross. Corner for Everton, from which nothing comes.

23 min: Southampton won a corner from that Howard save from Tim Howard and 46 seconds later found themselves a goal down. From the corner, Everton broke out of their own penalty area and the ball was played forward to Arouna Kone, with Lukaku galloping through the centre in support.

Kone sent in the cross, which was a little behind Lukaku, who did well to stretch backwards and send a cushioned header across the face of goal and into the top right-hand corner off the cross-bar. Good goal.

20 min: Southampton capitalise on a poor clearance by Seamus Coleman to get the ball into the Everton penalty area. Pelle plays in Mane, who shoots low, hard and diagonally from left to right. Tim Howard gets down to save with his legs.

18 min: It’s been a very entertaining match so far. Southampton are playing the more attractive football and look a lot more dangerous, but Everton have had their moments too. They’re doing OK.

15 min: Dreadful effort from Pelle, who skims a header harmlessly wide when scoring looked easier. On the edge of the six-yard box, he got the jump on Seamus Coleman to get on the end of a perfectly placed cross from Tadic, but got no power whatsoever on his header. For a man of his siz and ability, he really should have done a lot better.

14 min: For Southampton, Steven Davis floats a cross towards the far post for Pelle, who knocks it down. Tadic attempts to shoot from 14 metres out, but his effort is blocked well by Phil Jagielka and Everton clear ... eventually. Good defending.

12 min: Shane Long attempts gets past Seamus Coleman, who is caught out of position and prods the ball down the inside left channel for Sadio Mane to chase. Rather than cross, he attempts a shot from a ridiculously narrow angle and finds the side-netting.

11 min: Cleverly, Kone and Lukaku seem to be rotating up front for Everton. On more than one occasion, Lukaku’s received the ball out on the flank, with Kone up in support in the centre.

10 min: Southampton win a free-kick, halfway inside the Everton half. Dusan Tadic lofts the ball towards the edge of the penalty area towards the giant Graziano Pelle, but Everton clear.

8 min: Arouna Kone wins Everton’s first corner, courtesy of a deflected shot after making room for a shot in the Southampton penalty area. Nothing comes of it; the delivery is poor.

6 min: Matt Targett brings down Romelu Lukaku has he surges down the inside left channel towards the Southampton penalty area. Everton’s players appeal for a penalty, but none is forthcoming. Replays show the referee’s decision to be spot on. He books Targett and Everton have a free-kick just outside the Southampton penalty area, left-hand side. Cleverly drives the ball into the wall.

5 min: Everton concede the first corner of the game, after some sloppy play leads to Tim Howard being put under pressure.

4 min: Steven Davis surges through the centre towards the Everton penalty area, playing the ball to Shane Long and running on for a return pass that never comes. The Irishman’s first touch was poor. It’s been a lively start from Southampton, who are really putting Everton under the cosh.

2 min: Good defending from John Stones, who steps in to clear Matt Targett’s diagonal cross from the left before Graziano Pelle can get to it from 10 yards out. .
