England v New Zealand live
Cricket
It’s day three of the third and deciding Test at Trent Bridge and Tim de Lisle and James Wallace will helm our essential over-by-over coverage. Ben Stokes’ return to international duty has so far been a gripping affair during a relentless heatwave. England’s skipper is back in the fold since the incident in a London nightclub that led to him and the fast bowler Gus Atkinson being issued written conduct warnings, while being cleared of any wrongdoing in an altercation with a Saracens player. England lost heavily at the Oval in his absence and Stokes understands he is under huge pressure to deliver a victory. Reporting from Nottingham are Ali Martin, Andy Bull and Simon Burton.

Austrian GP qualifying live
Formula One
Philip Cornwall clambers into the liveblog cockpit for lap-by-lap coverage of qualifying for the eighth of 22 scheduled rounds. A resurgent Lewis Hamilton heads into this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix firmly in the title discussion after he charged to his first Ferrari victory at the previous round in Spain. Hamilton’s triumph ended a 686-day wait for a main-race victory after an ugly first season in red where he failed to record a single podium. The British veteran is second in the standings, 41 points behind Mercedes’s 19-year-old Kimi Antonelli. Giles Richards reports from the Red Bull Ring.

Women’s T20 World Cup
Danni Wyatt-Hodge powered England into the semi-finals with a well-crafted 65 in a 38-run victory over the West Indies at Lord’s. That made it four wins from four in the home tournament after they posted 186 for seven, with Wyatt-Hodge hitting eight fours in a fine 42-ball innings before being run out. The victory secured a last-four berth and top spot in Group B, ensuring no semi-final meeting with the Group A leaders and six-time T20 champions, Australia. For Saturday’s final group fixture with New Zealand, Taha Hashim will helm the liveblog, with Raf Nicholson reporting from the Oval.

England v Panama live
World Cup 2026
England head into their final Group L game keen to take top spot with a win, despite a frustrating 0-0 draw with Ghana that drew criticism for the team’s lack of attacking threat. The dazzling 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opener suggested Thomas Tuchel’s side might finally have found the blend of talent and authority required to end six decades of hurt. Then came Ghana and a goalless draw that brought England back down to earth, exposing the familiar frustrations that have haunted them at major tournaments. Still, the Three Lions face already-eliminated Panama, knowing victory will give them a great chance of finishing top of the group. Scott Murray brings the noise as blog host with our reporting team of David Hytner, Jacob Steinberg, Barney Ronay and Ed Aarons reporting from New Jersey.
10pm (5pm ET)
Croatia v Ghana live
World Cup 2026
Croatia and Ghana go into Saturday’s final Group L game with their World Cup destiny in their own hands, and a draw could send both sides into the last 32. Ghana are second in the group, level on four points with the leaders, England. Croatia are one point behind in third, and cannot finish any lower having beaten fourth-placed Panama. Croatia may need a draw to ensure they claim one of the eight best third-placed berths in the knockout round, and will be leaving nothing to chance. Will Unwin has minute-by-minute coverage, while Paul MacInnes and Leander Schaerlaeckens are our match reporters.

And so to the Red Bull Ring, where McLaren finished one-two last year on their way to winning both titles. That dominance has faded fast, with the team third in the constructors’ standings, a whopping 121 points behind the pacesetters, Mercedes, after seven rounds. Oscar Piastri has had an up-and-down season, with the Australian failing to start the first two races in Australia and China but then finishing second in Japan and third in Miami. His teammate Lando Norris, reigning champion and last year’s winner in Spielberg, was second in Miami and third in Barcelona this month. Kimi Antonelli stands 41 points clear of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton in the championship, but the situation could change quickly. Dominic Booth has lap-by-lap coverage, with Giles Richards reporting.

Women’s T20 World Cup
Two powerhouses of women’s cricket meet at Lord’s on Sunday. Sophie Molineux’s Australia, with their place in the semi-finals almost assured, have the chance to knock Harmanpreet Kaur’s India out of the tournament. But India remain confident they can earn the victory over their old rivals that would most likely earn them a reprieve, pipping South Africa for the second place in the group and enabling them to advance to the last four. Join us for over-by-over coverage from Cameron Ponsonby, plus reports from Raf Nicholson and Geoff Lemon.

South Africa v Canada live
World Cup
Daniel Harris brings live coverage of the first game in the World Cup’s last 32. Canada must leave home turf and head to Los Angeles after finishing second in Group B, while South Africa edged into the runner-up spot in Group A with victory over South Korea. Taking on another side making their knockout debut, Jesse Marsch’s co-hosts have a great chance to make the last 16 – but Bafana Bafana cannot be taken lightly. An intriguing battle awaits.
