Andy Hunter was at Anfield. Here’s his report. Thanks for reading this MBM.

Andoni Iraola speaks to Amazon Prime. “A lot of things have happened today … they were much better than us in the first half … we were much better than them in the second … you cannot relax … they are really good … I’m happy and value the win because the opponent is very good … we know if we do not go to the limit it’s going to be difficult … we are facing very good teams … it will not get any easier … we must stop conceding … Brighton [who Liverpool are playing on Sunday] are flying right now … a similar style to Villarreal in a lot of ways … they are second in everything to Barcelona … it’s a good game to prepare … [Rio Ngumoha] is trying to improve everything we are trying to correct … even defensively … he is becoming a more complete player.”

Post-match postbag. “For us old-fashioned coves who get a bit tired of inverted wingers, it’s refreshing to see Iraola playing Rio on the right where he can beat a man on the outside and cross” – Alex Welby

“Anyone who watched Liverpool last year will be very happy that Ngumoha is getting regular game time. The rest of the team have looked leaden, but he’s injected some much needed pace into the attack. Maybe unleashing him will enable Wirtz to work better in the spaces that his runs will produce” – Andy (not that one) Flintoff

“I’m reminded of an old line about European games. You shouldn’t score against Liverpool at Anfield, it only annoys them” – Bill Jones

“Barcelona may have teenage sensations in the form of Lamine Yamal and Xavi Espart but Liverpool have a gem in Rio Ngumoha. He teased Villarreal for most of the match with his scintillating runs but his assist for Mac Allister was something else. He has been the difference against a lively Villarreal who gave Napoli such a tough time of it last week” – Colum Fordham

“I can’t believe VAR won’t disallow the Wirtz goal. He was wearing gloves in mid-October. What’s happened to my country etc?” – Paul Griffin

Alexis Mac Allister talks to Amazon Prime. “Rio worked really hard off the ball and that is important for us as well … 30, 35 minutes into the first half, we made some changes … Trey [Nyoni] dropped a little … we were in a rush and not playing well … thanks to the manager we changed and we did well … as you can see I am not tall … but I like to attack the near post … last year was a really difficult year for all of us … it was clear I was not at the level … I am the first to say … something wasn’t right in the group … this manager changed it … I am feeling good now … I said what I said [about my contract] because of my emotions … I will do my best and we will see what happens!”

Rio Ngumoha, who tonight became the youngest-ever player to assist a goal for Liverpool in the Champions League, smiles his way through an interview with Amazon Prime. “It was a top performance from the boys … we were two goals down but the mentality was always there … [his performance] was up there with one of the best I’ve played … the team helped me a lot … I enjoyed today … whenever I get the ball, and the opportunity to go two v one, I’ll do it … I’ll just keep going and be ruthless … these records are amazing to break … slowly I am getting better … we have the best fans in the world … to hear my name being chanted is a dream!”

Updated

We’re only halfway through Matchday 3, of course … but the early Champions League table makes good reading for Liverpool. Villarreal are 18th on three points.

Pos Team P GD Pts
1 PSG 3 9 9
2 Liverpool 3 5 9
3 Stuttgart 3 5 7
4 Aston Villa 2 7 6
5 Barcelona 3 5 6

Anfield celebrates more in relief than joy. That was a fine comeback victory, but one Liverpool had to work so hard to achieve. Alexis Mac Allister, the two-goal hero, looks utterly spent of energy. By contrast, Rio Ngumoha, the star of the show, is bouncing around in the knowledge that he put in a performance for the ages. Showcasing his skills from the get-go, he was the only Liverpool player to show any sparkle during the home side’s 35-minute cold start. Then he moved it up several more notches, teeing up Ronald Araújo for the equaliser that took all of the momentum away from Villarreal, and later Mac Allister for the goal that sent Liverpool on their way to victory. Andoni Iraola will be concerned by the way his team started the match, delighted by the way they responded. Some similarities to the early stages of the Jurgen Klopp era, when Liverpool got involved in a series of high-scoring thrillers. A lot for Iraola still to fix, then, but if history is any guide, it should be great fun watching him work.

FULL TIME: Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal

Liverpool come back from two down for the first time since beating … Villarreal 3-2 in the 2022 Champions League semi-final. It all comes around.

90 min: +3: Gravenberch’s long diagonal finds Tsimikas on the left. Tsimikas wins a corner, but there’s no time to take it!

90 min +2: Wirtz plays Isak into some space down the left. Isak can’t get a shot away, and then the flag goes up for offside anyway. Villarreal counter, and Perez shoots from the edge of the box. A deflection takes the sting out of the shot, which dribbles through to Alisson.

90 min +1: Gueye loops a cross in from a deep position on the left. Easy for Allison.

90 min: Mac Allister feeds Isak into the box down the left … but Veiga pushes the striker wider than he’d like, and blocks the eventual shot from a tight angle. There will be three additional minutes.

89 min: Cardona crosses from the left. Alisson gathers low in his six-yard box. There were no yellow shirts putting him under pressure.

88 min: … and as a result of that, Anfield is quiet, and Villarreal are snapping into tackles again! This most certainly is not over yet!

GOAL! Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal (Oluwaseyi 87)

Hold on a minute, this isn’t over just yet! Perez is pinged clear down the right. He wedges across for Oluwaseyi, who opens his body and slams a sidefoot into the bottom left from eight yards. One last big twist coming up?

Updated

86 min: Wirtz plays McConnell into the box down the right. McConnell crosses deep for Gakpo, who attempts a bicycle kick from six yards that nearly hits the roof of the Kop. And turns out he was offside anyway.

85 min: Perez probes down the right and cuts back for Moreno, who opens his body and looks for the left-hand corner … but his shot is always heading a long way wide. Alisson wanders over to watch its progress.

83 min: Villarreal enjoy a rare period of possession in Liverpool territory. But do very little with it, the hosts holding their shape, and eventually the flag pops up for offside.

81 min: Nyoni, who has been quietly efficient as ever, ends his shift. Such a promising player. McConnell comes on in his place.

79 min: Santi Comesaña is replaced by Gerard Moreno, Villarreal’s all-time record goalscorer. Speaking of which, Liverpool’s version, Ian Rush, is in the stand, and he’s 66 years young today.

77 min: Liverpool ping it around calmly. Such a gulf between their second-half performance and the majority of their first.

75 min: Ngumoha, who is surely Liverpool’s player of the match, makes way for Barcola, while Gomez replaces Jacquet. Rio’s name rings around Anfield. A new hero is born. He sits on the bench with the widest of smiles. What a performance. He’s hauled his team out of bother tonight, elegantly, sensationally so.

73 min: Perez is sent free down the middle. His low shot beats Alisson, but clanks off the base of the left-hand post and away. So unlucky. And then the flag goes up for offside. VAR might have taken a second look, mind, had that gone in. It was cigarette-paper close.

72 min: Wirtz plays a cute reverse pass down the left to release Gakpo into acres. Gakpo has Isak clear in the middle, but opts to shoot himself. The shot is blocked. You’d imagine Isak is furious … but he’s not really the demonstrative type. Which is not to say that might not be discussed in the full and frank style during any post-match debrief.

70 min: Ngumoha moves smoothly in from the right and aims for the top left. Inches wide, the keeper nowhere. Anfield is loud enough right now, but had that gone in, the roof would have sheared clean off.

GOAL! Liverpool 4-2 Villarreal (Wirtz 68)

Yes, it’s one of those nights all right! Tsimikas sends a pass down the left for Gakpo, who shifts the ball infield for Wirtz, who takes a touch as he enters the box before arrowing a forensic drive across the keeper and into the bottom right. Anfield en fête!

Updated

67 min: Koumas, who has put in a shift tonight, is replaced by Isak. The mood in Anfield so different now. Perhaps it’s going to be one of those nights after all!

GOAL! Liverpool 3-2 Villarreal (Mac Allister 65)

Ngumoha zips past four yellow shirts down the right at wild speed. He enters the box and fires low into the centre. Mac Allister can’t miss from four yards, even though he tries his best to, his shot smacking off the underside of the bar before rippling the net. What a run by Ngumoha, who is serenaded by the Kop for his other-worldly talent.

Updated

63 min: Right to left, across the face of the Villarreal box: Ngumoha, Gravenberch, Gakpo, Tsimikas. The latter whistles the ball back through the six-yard box, at the speed of light. Koumas misses it by inches, which is probably as well, as had the ball made any sort of contact, he may no longer have many of his facial features (nose, eyebrows, lips, chin, etc.). That was blootered, some would argue at an unnecessarily excitable velocity. Still, any touch, and it was a goal.

61 min: Nyoni’s vicious daisycutter flies inches wide of the right-hand post. Gulacsi probably had it covered, but he’d have required a strong wrist to keep that one out. Goal kick.

60 min: Villarreal need to change something, and they do. Mikautadze and Buchanan are replaced by Freeman and one-time Newcastle and Leicester winger Ayoze Pérez.

58 min: Mac Allister’s long-range effort is deflected wide right. He takes the corner himself. Veiga heads it clear. But Villarreal are sitting back now, inviting pressure, waiting for the opportunity to counter. A huge difference to the first half.

57 min: Wirtz dances his way down the left and checks back from the byline before spinning and shooting. Gulacsi is on point to claim. Wirtz has looked lively since coming on, following impressive outings against LASK and Brentford.

55 min: Tsimikas has his critics, but he’s never stopped tonight, battling for everything, one of the players whose energy finally kick-started Liverpool into action late in the first half. Now his low cross finds Koumas, whose selfless back-flick nearly tees up Gakpo; then his free kick from the left forces Gulacsi into some flapping the keeper just about gets away with. All of the momentum is with Liverpool now.

54 min: Ngumoha wins another corner down the right. Before it can be taken, Villarreal make a defensively minded switch, replacing Alberto Moleiro with erstwhile Spurs star Juan Foyth. And then the corner, which is a waste of everyone’s time.

53 min: Tsimikas and Mac Allister bustle their way down the left and tee up Gakpo, who threads a shot towards the bottom left. Easy enough for Gulacsi. “Allow me to be the 37th wag to suggest the last thing Virgil needs is to spend even more time gazing into a mirror,” quips Ian Copestake.

52 min: The last time Liverpool won a match from two down was, eerily, that aforementioned 2022 Champions League semi-final against Villarreal. Given the way the first half went, it’s perhaps too early to start dreaming about that circle coming back around.

50 min: Ngumoha, who looks totally at home at this level, sashays his way down the right and earns another corner. Again, nothing happens at the set piece. But this is so much better from Liverpool.

48 min: Nothing comes of the corner. Ngumoha is still fuming a bit. You can hardly blame him.

47 min: Ngumoha jinks through two challenges and into the Villarreal box from the right. That’s sensational. But before he can cock his leg to shoot, Gravenberch snatches the ball off him and aims towards the top right. The ball’s deflected wide. Ngumoha gives his team-mate a glance that can most charitably be described as brooding and enigmatic.

46 min: Looks as though Gravenberch is taking over at right-back for Liverpool.

Liverpool get the second half started. They’ve unsurprisingly made a change, perhaps surprisingly just the one. Florian Wirtz comes on for Ronald Araújo. Villarreal have also made a swap, sending on Tani Oluwaseyi for Nathan Saliba.

Half-time postbag. “Liverpool push up with all the speed and intensity of a World War I general nudging his model soldiers across a table top French field. And, unsurprisingly, they similarly get caught in no man’s land” – Niall Mullen

“How is it 2-2? But I’m here for it” – Stuart Wright

“In this of all matches I admire your commitment to the diacritics, sir. As a dire critic myself it speaks volumes of your dedication to the lingüística” = Ian Copestake

That is one heck of a double whammy from Liverpool. They spent most of that half losing nearly all of the midfield duels, to the point where Villarreal began running through their repertoire of feints and fancy flicks. The Spanish side in total control. But Liverpool nicked one back, and then a moment of brilliance from Rio Ngumoha changed everything. Liverpool fans will hope Virgil van Dijk spends the majority of the half-time break having a good look in the mirror.

HALF TIME: Liverpool 2-2 Villarreal

Liverpool have, for the most part, been abysmal. But now look!

GOAL! Liverpool 2-2 Villarreal (Araujo 45+2)

The corner’s half-cleared. Ngumoha picks up possession on the left. He checks back onto his right foot and sends an inswinger towards the far post. Cardona shepherds it out for a goal kick … or so he thinks, because he doesn’t realise Araujo is steaming in behind him! Araujo can’t miss with his header from a couple of yards, and he gets his reward for never giving up!

Updated

45 min +1: In the first and only added minute, Gravenberch stumbles his way into the box down the left and wins a corner despite falling over. And from that …

44 min: Gakpo and Tsimikas perform a mid-distance one-two down the left. Gakpo enters the box, chops his way past one challenge, and shoots from a tight angle. The shot is blocked bravely by Veiga, the ball hitting his arm, but there’s no way it’s a penalty. Arm tucked into side, back turned. No way.

43 min: Araujo embarks on a fine run down the right. He makes himself enough time and space to cross … but then blooters wildly into the Anfield Road end.

42 min: Nothing comes of the resulting corner, and Liverpool counter through Gakpo, whose run down the inside-left channel is brought to an ungainly halt by Mouriño, who goes into the book. Mac Allister aims the free kick towards the top left, but it’s always heading high and wide.

41 min: Mouriño is afforded too much time and space, 30 yards out, just to the right of centre. He eventually pearls a rising shot that Alisson is forced to tip over the bar. That was heading in. Van Dijk again too slow to come out to block. For the most part this season, he’s belied his 35 years; he’s showing them tonight.

39 min: Mac Allister wheechs a low long-distance drive inches wide of the bottom left. Gulacsi had it covered, to be fair.

38 min: That’s lifted the mood in Anfield all right. Will it rattle Villarreal, who were performing keepie-uppies and throwing dummies a few minutes ago, at all?

GOAL! Liverpool 1-2 Villarreal (Mac Allister 36)

The corner whipped in from the right. Mac Allister rises eight yards out, level with the near post, and flick-loops an unstoppable header across Gulacsi and into the left-hand side of the net. Oh my, how Liverpool needed that.

Updated

35 min: Gakpo sends a low cross in from the left. Koumas misses the ball by an inch. Veiga turns behind for a corner, from which …

34 min: Mikautadze has the opportunity to release Comesaña down the middle. Which he does, but a split second too late, and the flag pops up for offside. Araujo had hared back as emergency cover, to be fair, but otherwise, Liverpool were once again all over the show.

32 min: Moleiro cuts in from the left and aims for the far corner. The ball takes a deflection off Araujo and only just misses the bottom-right corner. Not sure Alisson had that covered. Then adding insult to injury, the officials award a goal kick. That was beyond obvious.

31 min: On the touchline, Iraola looks utterly disgusted with his side. Perez, his old friend, deadpans, unwilling to gloat. But his team have been so much better. This scoreline doesn’t flatter Villarreal at all.

GOAL! Liverpool 0-2 Villarreal (Cardona 29)

Liverpool with the high line. Saliba drops into a pocket of space just to the right of the centre circle. He slips a diagonal pass towards Cardona, who is pinged free down the inside-left channel. Cardona reaches the box, draws Alisson, opens his body, and slots into the bottom left. Simple as that.

Updated

27 min: Moleiro is booked for a tug on Ngumoha’s shirt. Doubly pointless, as the Liverpool winger was near his own corner flag, going nowhere fast.

25 min: This is better from Liverpool, though: they pin Villarreal back for the best part of a couple of minutes. But not that much better: there’s no way through to the Villarreal box.

23 min: Nyoni wins the ball down the inside-left channel and slips infield for Gravenberch, who under pressure only just manages to get a shot away from the edge of the Villarreal D. The ball dribbles through to the keeper.

22 min: Van Dijk tries to make up for all that with a header from a corner. It’s blocked and cleared. The corner had been won by the livewire Ngumoha, who diddled his way down the right with speed and grace, reaching the byline and hitting a shot-cum-cross that Gulacsi, formerly of Anfield parish, nearly palmed into his own net.

21 min: Turns out Mikautadze was offside, but whether that should save Van Dijk’s blushes is debatable. It was another egregious unforced error from the Liverpool captain, who but for a yard here and there, would have been solely culpable for a 0-2 scoreline.

19 min: Mikautadze scampers down the right in acres of space. He’s got two team-mates in the Liverpool box, where there’s just one defender, but somehow bisects them both and the hosts get away with it. It would have been a tap-in had he found one of them. And that all started by Van Dijk slapping a simple pass straight at an opponent upfield, allowing Villarreal to launch the counter from which they should have scored.

17 min: Buchanan makes good down the right and fizzes a dangerous low ball through the Liverpool six-yard box. Had Mikautadze kept moving, Liverpool were in all sorts of trouble, but he’d checked his run.

16 min: Ngumoha turns on the jets down the right to sail past a couple of challenges with absurd ease. He enters the box but the cross doesn’t match the quality of the run. He’s been Liverpool’s sole bright light so far, though.

15 min: Mouriño slips the ball in from the right and finds Saliba, whose spin and low shot whistles inches wide of the bottom right. In fact it took a deflection, though nothing comes of the corner.

13 min: … and Anfield is extremely quiet as a result. Not one of those famous nights just yet.

11 min: That one Ngumoha run apart, Liverpool have shown nothing in attack. Villarreal have made themselves at home.

9 min: Another long pump down the middle that Van Dijk this time deals with. Villarreal are going to keep doing this, and on the early evidence, you can hardly blame them.

7 min: That early blow has stunned Anfield. Ngumoha gets everyone going again with a determined dribble down the right, shooting from a tight angle. Blocked. But much better. Liverpool finally turning up for work.

6 min: Van Dijk puts his arm up by way of apology, but that was an awful mistake. Such a simple header back to the keeper, but it was never getting there. Still, that’s your Guardian Goal Guarantee™!!!

GOAL! Liverpool 0-1 Villarreal (Mikautadze 4)

A howler from Van Dijk. Another long ball down the middle. It should be a simple header back to Allison, but he loops it weirdly high into the air, allowing Mikautadze to nip in and slot a shot across Alisson and into the bottom right! And despite the fact we’ve barely started, it had been coming!

Updated

3 min: Mikautadze buzzes around again, this time down the inside-left channel. He enters the box and tries to spin Jacquet, but the calm young France international isn’t having any of it, standing his ground before ushering the ball back to Alisson. A promising start by Villarreal nonetheless.

2 min: A simple long ball down the middle nearly opens up Liverpool. Van Dijk misjudges it, but Mikautadze doesn’t appear to know how to react, and spins around instead of driving towards the box. The striker eventually falls over and Liverpool clear their lines.

Villarreal kick off. They’re kicking towards the Kop in this first half.

Both sets of fans give their all to this evening’s pre-match dip into the Rodgers and Hammerstein songbook. Nunca caminarás solo! After which the teams take to the field of play. Liverpool in red, Villarreal in yellow, everyone looking real crisp and clean. A fine atmosphere on a rainy night on Merseyside. The close pals Andoni Iraola and Iñigo Pérez embrace before facing off. We’ll be off in a couple of minutes.

Guardian Goal Guarantee™!!! Tonight’s MBM comes with a Guardian Goal Guarantee™!!! That’s because …

  • None of Liverpool’s last 55 matches in Europe have finished goalless, a sequence stretching back to 2020-21

  • None of Liverpool’s last 83 Champions League group stage/league phase fixtures have finished goalless, a sequence stretching back to 2006-07

  • Villarreal have conceded in each of their last 13 European matches, a sequence that, like both of Liverpool’s above, is a club record

So that’s a Guardian Goal Guarantee™!!! Or your money back! †

†: LEGAL DISCLAIMER: You will not receive any money back.

Villarreal qualified for this season’s Champions League by finishing third in Spain last season. They didn’t start the new campaign very well, with two draws and three defeats, but they’ve since rediscovered a little mojo, a couple of wins bringing them some mid-table respectability: they’re currently 12th in La Liga. Meanwhile they’re one from two in Europe, having lost their opening Champions League fixture 3-2 at Borussia Dortmund, then beaten Napoli 3-1 at home.

Liverpool and Villarreal have been drawn together in Europe on two previous occasions. Both ties were semi-finals – of the 2016 Europa League and the 2022 Champions League - and though both were eventually won by Liverpool, Villarreal gave Jurgen Klopp’s side a fright on both occasions. Relive those rollercoaster rides now, in the new-fangled minute-by-minute style!

The rest of your required pre-match reading. Sid Lowe once again sets the scene, this time by telling the tale of the man who charted the Yellow Submarine’s rise from the depths of the regionalised Segunda B to Europa League glory.

Andoni Iraola speaks to Amazon Prime. “We have had two important wins … but we cannot stop … there is a very good team in front of us … it’s the fourth game in ten days … Florian [Wirtz] and Bradley [Barcola] have played every minute [of those games so far] … so we have to be sensible … Alex [Isak] was playing well but he is coming off the back of a massive injury so we have to be considerate … they are ready to go in the second half … [Lewis Koumas] was played well in the first half against Manchester City … Rio [Ngumoha] was really good in the second half against Brentford … the [Villarreal] full backs attack so [Rio] will have to do the job both ways … it is probably difficult to find someone who knows me better [than Iñigo Pérez] … I hope my players can make the difference.”

Liverpool make six changes to their starting XI following the 2-1 win at Brentford. Ryan Gravenberch returns after his Premier League suspension, while Cody Gakpo is back from injury. Kostas Tsimikas, Trey Nyoni, Lewis Koumas and Rio Ngumoha also step up. Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Bradley Barcola and Milos Kerkez drop to the bench, while Dominik Szoboszlai and Víctor Muñoz are injured.

The teams

Preamble

This is a match between Liverpool and Villarreal. One of the top teams in England versus one of the top teams in Spain. The Premier League versus La Liga. The Redmen versus the Yellow Submarine. And yet it’s really none of that. Some things go down to the micro level, as Sid Lowe explains with trademark eloquence in the first part (there will be more, and you will enjoy it) of your required pre-match reading …

Andoni Iraola versus his close compadre Iñigo Pérez kicks off at 8pm BST. Hasi da! It’s on!
