Arsenal
What they need Arsène Wenger has admitted that he is in the market for defensive cover and a defensive midfielder, as are, he says, "half the managers in the Premier League". Injuries exposed the thinness of his defensive resources at the end of last season. He cannot allow the same thing to happen again.
Possible targets Wenger has not ruled out a move for Patrick Vieira, despite the possibility seeming outlandish all along, and he has an interest in St Etienne's young midfielder Blaise Matuidi, although he denies that a move is afoot. He also likes the Fulham centre-half Brede Hangeland but he is reluctant to pay upwards of £10m. A late move for the Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh should not be discounted.
Likelihood of buying: 6/10 As usual, Wenger will only move if he feels the price is right; he is quite happy with the composition of his squad as it is. It would be a surprise if he does not sign a defender, although that possibility may depend on whether they can sell Philippe Senderos. DH
In: Thomas Vermaelen (Ajax, £10m), Damián Martínez (Independiente, £1.2m)
Out: Emmanuel Adebayor (Manchester City, £25m), Kolo Touré (Manchester City, £14m), Abu Ogogo (Dagenham & Redbridge, free), Rene Steer (Oldham Athletic, free), Amaury Bischoff (released), Rui Fonte (released), Paul Rodgers (released), James Dunne (released), Vincent van den Berg (released), Anton Blackwood (released), Havard Nordtveit (Nuremberg, loan), Jay Emmanuel-Thomas (Blackpool, loan)
Aston Villa
What they need At least three signings to add some much-needed strength in depth. Yet to replace Gareth Barry or Martin Laursen, hence a creative midfielder and an experienced central defender, possibly two, are priorities. Martin O'Neill is also keen to bring in a left-back, with doubts persisting about Nicky Shorey's long-term future at the club and Wilfred Bouma's ability to recover from injury.
Possible targets Sylvain Distin, Richard Dunne and West Ham United's James Collins and Matthew Upson are all on the central-defence short-list, while O'Neill hopes to sign Stephen Warnock to fill the left-back berth. In midfield, the manager retains a strong interest in Tottenham's Jermaine Jenas and there remains an outside chance David Bentley could join him.
Likelihood of buying: 10/10 Villa simply have to invest before the window closes because the squad is so threadbare. The key issue surrounds how much money O'Neill has to play with. Randy Lerner, the Villa chairman, suggested there would be modest spending this summer but a small kitty is not going to get O'Neill what he needs to compete. SJ
In: Stewart Downing (Middlesbrough, £12m), Habib Beye (Newcastle, £3m), Fabian Delph (undisclosed), Andy Marshall (free)
Out: Gareth Barry (Manchester City, £12m), Stuart Taylor (Manchester City, free), Zat Knight (Bolton Wanderers, £4m), Martin Laursen (retired)
Birmingham City
What they need A dynamic central midfielder and, in an ideal world, a proven goalscorer. There is plenty of experience within the Birmingham side but a desperate lack of athleticism and creativity in central midfield which Alex McLeish has been keen to address. The Birmingham manager must also wish he could add another striker with Premier League pedigree to augment a misfiring forward line.
Possible targets Birmingham have been tracking Michel for most of the summer, with McLeish making no secret of his admiration for the Spanish playmaker and hopeful that a £2.5m deal can be concluded in the next 24 hours. He has also shown interest in Arsenal's Armand Traoré but seems unlikely to pursue the left-back after signing Gregory Vignal last week.
Likelihood of buying: 8/10 The Birmingham board has signalled a willingness to go over budget and fund the Michel deal but anything after that will almost certainly have to come from Carson Yeung's pocket. The Hong Kong-based businessman has indicated that he would be willing to buy some useful players before the deadline. Presumably McLeish will have some say in whom they might be. SJ
In: Christian Benítez (Santos Laguna, £7.7m), Scott Dann (Coventry City, £3.5m), Joe Hart (Manchester City, loan), Lee Bowyer (West Ham United, free), Roger Johnson (Cardiff City, £5m), Barry Ferguson (Rangers, £1.5m), Giovanny Espinoza (Barcelona Sporting Club, free), Stephen Carr (unattached, free), James O'Shea (Galway United, nominal), Gregory Vignal (Lens, loan)
Out: Stephen Kelly (Fulham, free), Krystian Pearce (Peterborough, loan), Robin Shroot (Burton, loan), James McPike (Kettering, free), Michael McKerr (Oldham, free), Semih Aydilek (released), Radhi Jaidi (released), Mehdi Nafti (released), Artur Krysiak (released)
Blackburn Rovers
What they need At the moment Sam Allardyce is more concerned about losing players than bringing them in.
Possible targets If Stephen Warnock completes a move to Aston Villa, Allardyce will be forced to replace him, possibly with a couple of defensive signings as Ryan Nelsen is struggling with a recurrence of ligament trouble. Benni McCarthy is the latest Blackburn player to be linked with a possible move, so Allardyce can expect a busy few days one way or the other.
Likelihood of buying: 8/10 He enjoys a bit of wheeling and dealing and probably wouldn't want it any other way. PW
In: Lars Jacobsen (Everton, free), Steven N'Zonzi (Amiens, undisclosed), Gaël Givet (Marseille, £3.5m), Nikos Giannakopoulos (Asteras, £5,000), Elrio van Heerden (Bruges, free), Franco Di Santo (Chelsea, loan), Nikola Kalinic (Hajduk Split, £12m), Michel Selgado (Real Madrid, free)
Out: Roque Santa Cruz (Manchester City, £17.5m), Matt Derbyshire (Olympiakos, £3m), Aaron Mokoena (Portsmouth, free), Dean Winnard (Accrington, free), Andreas Arestidou (Shrewsbury, free), Jamie Clarke (Lincoln, free), Tony Kane (Carlisle, free), Keith Treacy (Sheffield United, loan), Tugay Kerimoglu (retired), Andre Ooijer (released), Bjorn Bussmann (1860 Munich, nominal), Paul Gallagher (Leicester, £1m), Alex Marrow (Oldham Athletic, loan), Nick Blackman (Oldham Athletic, loan), Gavin Gunning (Tranmere, loan), Alan Judge (Plymouth, loan), Mark Bunn (Sheffield United, loan), Brian Hodge (released)
Bolton Wanderers
What they need Gary Megson is hoping to add bite to Bolton's attack.
Possible targets Megson is chasing the Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford, and before being frightened off by his price tag, was also vying with Wigan for the signature of Ferrie Bodde, Swansea's Dutch midfielder.
Likelihood of buying: 8/10 Bolton have not got unlimited funds and any deals will be dictated by price, but Megson is definitely looking for extra bodies this week, as well as hoping to hold on to Gary Cahill. PW
In: Zat Knight (Aston Villa, £4m), Sam Ricketts (Hull City, undisclosed), Sean Davis (Portsmouth, free), Paul Robinson (West Brom, loan)
Out: Blerim Dzemaili (Torino, undisclosed), James Sinclair (released), Robert Sissons (released), Nathan Woolfe (released), Ariza Makakula (Benfica, loan ended)
Burnley
What they need Made a good signing in André Bikey last week and may now prefer to wait until January to see what is needed, especially as Owen Coyle is on record as being frustrated by players who would rather sit out matches with more glamorous teams than come and play for a living at Turf Moor.
Possible targets Even before their dramatic start to Premier League life Coyle was fairly happy with what he had.
Likelihood of buying: 5/10 Coyle understands the club's financial situation although he says if the chairman makes money available, he will gladly spend it. PW
In: Tyrone Mears (Derby, £500,000), Steven Fletcher (Hibs, £3m), David Edgar (Newcastle, undisclosed), Richard Eckersley (Manchester Utd, undisclosed), Brian Easton (Hamilton, £350,000), Andre Bikey (Reading, £1.8m), Fernando Guerrero (Independiente del Valle, loan)
Out: Alan Mahon (Tranmere, free), Steve Jones (Walsall, free), Gavor Kiraly (released), Alex MacDonald (released)
Chelsea
What they need In a perfect world, they would still be aiming to secure the marquee signing they have craved all summer, an attacking flair player who can add invention, pace and vision to the experience and class already on show at Stamford Bridge. In reality, the players are not available at prices Chelsea are willing to pay.
Possible targets Franck Ribéry at Bayern Munich, Alexandre Pato at Milan, David Villa at Valencia or Andrea Pirlo at Milan.
Likelihood of buying: 2/10 The desire is there, but there is also a relative sense of perspective at the prices they are willing to pay. Given Ribéry, Villa and Pirlo do not appear keen to move, while Pato is not available, this could be a quiet final week of the window. DF
In: Daniel Sturridge (Manchester City, fee to be determined by a tribunal), Yuri Zhirkov (CSKA Moscow, £18m), Ross Turnbull (Middlesbrough, free), Nemanja Matic (MFK Kosice, £1.5m)
Out: Franco Di Santo (Blackburn Rovers, loan), Jimmy Smith (Leyton Orient, free), Ben Sahar (Espanyol, £1m), Frank Nouble (West Ham, nominal), Ryan Bertrand (Reading, loan), Tom Taiwo (Carlisle, loan), Lee Sawyer (Southend, loan), Michael Mancienne (Wolves, loan), Scott Sinclair (Wigan, loan), Claudio Pizarro (Werder Bremen, undisclosed), Morten Nielsen (AZ Alkmaar, nominal), Shaun Cummings (West Brom, loan), Sergio Tejera (Mallorca, nominal), Jack Cork (Coventry, loan)
Everton
What they need Apart from more time in the transfer window, David Moyes requires two defenders to compensate for the loss of Joleon Lescott, a solution to his extensive search for a combative central midfielder - even though new £9m signing Diniyar Bilyaletdinov can operate in the middle - and, in an ideal world, an entirely new right-flank.
Possible targets Negotiations are ongoing with Valencia for Éver Banega, their Argentina midfielder, while Sylvain Distin is the preferred choice to replace Lescott. Richard Dunne and Gary Cahill also feature on an extensive list of defenders.
Likelihood of buying: 10/10 Moyes has money to spend after the Lescott transfer and needs defenders. AH
In: Jô (Manchester City, loan), Anton Peterlin (Ventura County Fusion, signed), Cody Arnoux (Carolina Dynamo, signed), Shkodran Nustafi (Hamburg, undisclosed), Luke Garbutt (Leeds, subject to compensation), Diniyar Bilyaletdinov (Lokomotiv Moscow, undisclosed)
Out: Lars Jacobsen (Blackburn, free), Nuno Valente (released), Andy van der Meyde (released), John Paul Kissock (released), John Ruddy (Motherwell, loan), Tom McCready (Hibs, nominal), Joleon Lescott (Manchester City, undisclosed)
Fulham
What they need Although Roy Hodgson has declared himself content with the current squad, having recently added Damien Duff plus Jonathan Greening on a loan basis, Andrew Johnson's injury may cause him to reassess and there are reports the manager wants central-defensive back-up.
Possible targets Hodgson has a reported interest in the Le Mans centre-half Gregory Cerdan and Alméria striker Kalu Uche.
Likelihood of buying: 6/10 Hodgson may move for defenders if needed. JJ
In: Stephen Kelly (Birmingham, free), Bjorn Helge Riise (Lillestrom, undisclosed), Kagiso Dikgacoi (Golden Arrows, undisclosed – subject to work permit approval), Damien Duff (Newcastle, £2.5m), Jonathan Greening (West Brom, loan).
Out: Moritz Volz (released), Julian Gray (released), Troy Brown (Ipswich, free), Olivier Dacourt (Internazionale, end of loan)
Hull City
What they need Phil Brown will want Jimmy Bullard to somehow throw off his knee problems and suddenly prove sufficiently fit to be a dynamic midfield catalyst and Michael Turner to stay put at the KC and keep turning in impressive performances at centre-half.
Possible targets David Nugent would be a welcome addition from Portsmouth. Sol Campbell would have lent nous and stability to Phil Brown's backline if he hadn't joined Notts County. But above all what they need is for Brown to look less a man on perpetual edge and much more a manager on an even keel.
Likelihood of buying: 7/10 Brown is still intent on strengthening his squad. LT
In: Steven Mouyokolo (Boulogne, undisclosed), Seyi Olofinjana (Stoke, £3m), Jozy Altidore (Villarreal, loan), Stephen Hunt (Reading, £3m), Kamel Ghilas (Celta Vigo, £2m)
Out: Sam Ricketts (Bolton, undisclosed), Wayne Brown (Leicester, free), Matt Plummer (Darlington, free), Dean Windass (Darlington, free), James Bennett (Darlington, free), John Welsh (Tranmere, free), Ryan France (Sheffield United, free), Tom Woodhead (released), Michael Bridges (released), Joe Lamplough (released)
Liverpool
What they need Tom Hicks and George Gillett to provide Rafael Benítez with the net £20m spend he was promised for this summer, thereby allowing the Spaniard to make a quality addition to the Liverpool attack.
Possible targets Unless Real Madrid are prepared to let one of their unwanted assets go out on loan, or the American owners change their stance at the 11th hour, Benítez has his hands tied.
Likelihood of buying: 1/10 Benítez looks unlikely to spend before the next window opens. AH
In: Glen Johnson (Portsmouth, £18m), Alberto Aquilani (Roma, £20m), Sotirios Kyrgiakos (AEK Athens, £1.5), Aaron King (Rushden and Diamonds, nominal), Chris Mavinga (PSG, undisclosed).
Out: Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid, £30m) Alvaro Arbeloa (Real Madrid, £3.5m), Sebastien Leto (Panathinaikos, £1.3m), Paul Anderson (Nottingham Forest, £250,000), Sami Hyypia (Bayer Leverkusen, free), Jermaine Pennant (Espanyol, free), Jack Hobbs (Leicester, free), Astrit Ajdarevic (Leicester, free), Shane O'Connor (Ipswich, free), Ryan Flynn (Falkirk, loan), Dean Bouzanis (Wrexham, loan), Adam Hammill (Barnsley, undisclosed)
Manchester City
What they need Still plenty of money to spend, even if the Joleon Lescott transfer saga has now reached a favourable conclusion. They may want to strengthen the squad.
Possible targets Unlikely to want to go through anything along the lines of the Lescott saga in the next few days, and not presently linked with anyone else's most valuable players, so Mark Hughes may be able to sit tight and wait until January.
Likelihood of buying: 5/10 They have just demonstrated a willingness to hoover up free agents such as Sylvinho on short contracts, and further squad signings cannot be ruled out. PW
In: Carlos Tevez (unattached, £25m), Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal, £25m), Roque Santa Cruz (Blackburn, £17m), Kolo Touré (Arsenal, £14m), Gareth Barry (Aston Villa, £12m), Stuart Taylor (Aston Villa, free), Nils Zander (Shalke 04, undisclosed), Joleon Lescott (Everton, undisclosed)
Out: Elano (Galatasaray, undisclosed), Ched Evans (Sheff Utd, £3m), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea, undisclosed), Jô (Everton, loan), Felipe Caicedo (Sporting Lisbon, loan), Joe Hart (Birmingham, loan), Shaleum Logan (Tranmere, loan), Darius Vassell (Ankaragucu, free), Dietmar Hamann (released), Michael Ball (released), Danny Mills (released), Richard Martin (released), Angelos Tsiaklis (released), Kasper Schmeichel (Notts County, undisclosed), Valeri Bojinov (Parma, loan), Gelson Fernandes (Saint-Étienne, £2m), Leandro Berti Glauber (released)
Manchester United
What they need With Rio Ferdinand ever more injury prone and Jonny Evans needing surgery a short term defensive fix is a possibility.
Possible targets Sir Alex Ferguson keeps saying he will not be spending any more money and there is no reason to disbelieve him. Anderson may or may not be on the verge of walking out of Old Trafford but as the row is over his lack of first-team opportunity in any case, United appear unlikely to rush out and replace him.
Likelihood of buying: 4/10 Nemanja Vidic has reaffirmed his commitment to the club, though Ferguson is no fan of last-minute signings, and Dimitar Berbatov only went to the wire last season because Spurs kept United waiting all summer. PW
In: Antonio Valencia (Wigan, £16m), Michael Owen (Newcastle, free), Gabriel Obertan (Bordeaux, undisclosed), Mame Biram Diouf (Molde, undisclosed)
Out: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid, £80m), Fraizer Campbell (Sunderland, £3.5m), Carlos Tevez (loan ended), Manucho (Real Valladolid, undisclosed), Lee Martin (Ipswich, undisclosed), Richard Eckersley (Burnley, undisclosed), Rodrigo Possebon (Braga, loan)
Portsmouth
What they need Beyond goalkeepers Paul Hart needs to strengthen every area as he continues to haemorrhage players with the latest on the way appearing to be Sylvain Distin.
Possible targets Hart is hoping to bring in a further three or four players. Fratton Park is particularly short of strikers, with only David Nugent and the veteran Nwankwo Kanu, supporting the recently arrived Frédéric Piquionne on-loan from Lyon. Aruna Dindane of Lens is not yet a completed deal.
Likelihood of buying: 9/10 Unlike Zola at West Ham, Hart does not have to shift personnel to add to his squad. JJ
In: Steve Finnan (Espanyol, free), Aaron Mokoena (Blackburn, free), Antti Niemi (free), Frederic Piquionne (Lyon, loan), Anthony Vanden Borre (Genoa, loan)
Out: Glen Johnson (Liverpool, £18m), Peter Crouch (Tottenham, £9m), Sean Davis (Bolton, free), Andrea Mbuyi-Mutombo (Standard Liège, free), Andre Blackman (Bristol City, free), Noe Pamarot (released), Jerome Thomas (released), Lauren (released), Djimi Traoré (released), Glen Little (released), Martin Cranie (Coventry, undisclosed), Sol Campbell (released)
Stoke City
What they need Tony Pulis would like to strengthen just about every department but a right-back, central defender and a striker are high on his wish list, with the latter two positions seen as crucial. The Stoke manager is after an experienced centre-back to compete with Abdoulaye Faye and Ryan Shawcross, while up front Mamady Sidibé is still recovering from injury, leaving room for another forward.
Possible targets Signing rather than identifying players has been the problem for Stoke this summer, as it was last. Pulis would like to bring in James Collins from West Ham United and he has also considered a move for Middlesbrough's Robert Huth. Gary O'Neil, another Middlesbrough player, and Newcastle's Alan Smith are also being monitored.
Likelihood of buying: 9/10 Money has been burning a hole in Pulis's pocket after enduring another frustrating summer in the transfer market. The fact he was in for Michael Owen and Darren Bent suggests that Stoke have the wherewithal to pay top wages and substantial transfer fees. Whether they can convince players to come is another matter. SJ
In: Matt Lund (Crewe, nominal), Ben Marshall (Crewe, nominal), Dean Whitehead (Sunderland, initial £3m)
Out: Ben Marshall (Northampton, loan), Vincent Pericard (released), Marc Grocott (released), Jimmy Phillips (released), Tom Thorley (released)
Sunderland
What they need Pending the completion of work permit/visa applications – John Mensah, the Ghana centre-half, will shortly arrive from Lyon on a season-long loan. Steve Bruce has stiffened the spine of the side, introducing Darren Bent, Fraizer Campbell, Lorik Cana, Lee Cattermole and Paulo da Silva.
Possible targets Sunderland consequently now boast pace and power up front, two tough-tackling central midfield enforcers and an experienced Paraguay international centre-half. The new manager has said farewell to two players in the former captain, Dean Whitehead and the former Arsenal striker Anthony Stokes.
Possible targets Sunderland's new manager said he only wanted six signings and Mensah would be the sixth arrival of the summer on Wearside. Even so do not bet against possible moves for Portsmouth's Sylvain Distin, Manchester City's Richard Dunne and the former Blackburn and West Ham free agent Lucas Neill in defence. Or Bordeaux's Marouane Chamakh and Middlesbrough's Tuncay in attack. Bruce is also confident of signing Egyptian international Ahmed Al Muhammadi
Likelihood of buying: 7/10 Bruce stated after Monday's Carling Cup victory over Norwich that he is open to bringing more players in. LT
In: Lee Cattermole (Wigan Athletic, £6m), Darren Bent (Tottenham Hotspur, £10m), Lorik Cana (Marseille, £5m), Fraizer Campbell (Manchester United, £3.5m), Paulo da Silva (Toluca, free)
Out: Michael Chopra (Cardiff, £4m), Dean Whitehead (Stoke City, £3m), Greg Halford (Wolves, £2m), Nick Colgan (Grimsby, free), Peter Hartley (Hartlepool, Free), Arnau Riera (released), David Connolly (released), Dwight Yorke (released), Darren Ward (released), Djibril Cisse (Marseille, loan ended), Calum Davenport (West Ham, loan ended), Ben-Haim (Manchester City, loan ended), Anthony Stokes (Hibs, undisclosed), Nile McArdle (released)
Tottenham Hotspur
What they need Harry Redknapp has kept upheaval to a minimum thus far, which is a refreshing change at White Hart Lane, and he has two good quality players for every position, with the possible exception of left midfield, where none of his options – Luka Modric, Jamie O'Hara and Gareth Bale – would claim that the position was their favourite.
Possible targets Redknapp rates Niko Kranjcar at his former club Portsmouth and he likes Moussa Sissoko, Toulouse's highly rated young central midfielder, although Redknapp has been quoted a prohibitive price for him. He watched Scott Brown, the Scotland midfielder, play poorly for Celtic against Arsenal last Tuesday, while he is monitoring Sandro, a defensive midfielder from Internacional who represented Brazil at Under-20 level.
Likelihood of buying: 5/10 If Redknapp can get a price for David Bentley or even Jermaine Jenas, he would reinvest the proceeds. He has consistently said that he will only act before the closure of the transfer window if he could upgrade in any area. It wouldn't be Tottenham, though, without any last-minute shenanigans. DH
In: Peter Crouch (Portsmouth, £9m); Sébastien Bassong (Newcastle United, £8m); Kyle Naughton (Sheff Utd, Undisclosed); Kyle Walker (Sheff Utd, Undisclosed), Anton Blackwood (unattached).
Out: Darren Bent (Sunderland, £10m); Didier Zokora (Seville, £8.5m); Chris Gunter (Nottm Forest, £1.75m); Gilberto (Released); David Button (Crewe, Loan); Adel Taarabt (QPR, Loan); Ben Alnwick (Norwich, Loan); Troy Archibald-Henville (Exeter, Loan); Jacques Maghoma (Burton, Loan), Kyle Walker (Sheffield United, loan), Jake Livermore (Derby, loan), John Obika (Yeovil, loan), Andros Townsend (Leyton Orient, loan), Ricardo Rocha (released), Simon Dawkins (released), Kyle Fraser-Allen (released), Cian Hughton (released), Danny Hutchins (released), David Hutton (released), Takura Mtandari (released), Saulo AsaJile (released), Mark Clare (released), James Dalton (released), Ajet Shehu (released)
West Ham United
What they need Dean Ashton is still not training, leaving Carlton Cole as the only recognised front-line striker so Gianfranco Zola appears to need to add in this area even if Marouane Chamakh is signed from Lens. Luis Boa Morte's long-term injury indicates that the Italian may also look at bringing in a wide player. And, following the stabbing of Calum Davenport and James Collins's potential move to Stoke City, the manager may look to sign a defender.
Possible targets Beyond Chamakh, Luca Toni or Eidur Gudjohnsen are the favourite attacking options. But Zola has been told it is a strict one-in, one-out policy so if Collins leaves to facilitate Chamakh's arrival his options may narrow.
Likelihood of buying: 7/10 Finance available depends on who Zola can off-load. JJ
In: Herita Illunga (Toulouse, £2.75m), Luis Jiménez (Internazionale, loan), Frank Nouble (Chelsea, tribunal), Fabio Daprelà (Grasshopper, undisclosed), Peter Kurucz (Ujpest, undisclosed), Jack Lampe (Harlow, undisclosed), Robert Kovac (Spartak Moscow, £1.8m)
Out: Lee Bowyer (Birmingham City, free), Kyle Reid (Sheffield United, free), Joe Widdowson (Grimsby Town, free), Freddie Sears (Crystal Palace, loan), Diego Tristán (released), Walter López (released), Jimmy Walker (released), Tony Stokes (released), Lucas Neill (released), David Di Michale (Torino, loan ended), Jan Lastuvka (Shakhtar Donetsk, loan ended)
Wigan Athletic
What they need Roberto Martínez remains in the hunt for a midfielder to compensate for the loss of Lee Cattermole to Sunderland, despite acquiring Mohamed Diame from Rayo Vallecano just in time for the Frenchman to make his debut against Manchester United last Saturday.
Possible targets Martínez hopes to get Ferrie Boddeto follow him from Swansea City to the DW Stadium, despite the Swans' reluctance to sell.
Likelihood of buying: 6/10 All depends on how willing Swansea are to let Martínez continue cherry-picking their talent. AH
In: Jason Scotland (Swansea, £2m); Jordi Gómez (Espanyol, £1.7m); James McCarthy (Hamilton, undisclosed); Hendry Thomas (Deportivo Olimpia, free), Scott Sinclair (Chelsea, loan), Mohamed Diame (Rayo Vallecano, undisclosed), Antonio Amaya (Rayo Vallecano, subject to international clearance).
Out: Antonio Valencia (Manchester United, £16m); Lee Cattermole (Sunderland, £6m) Lewis Montrose (Wycombe, free); Amir Zaki (Zamalek, loan ended), Mido (Middlesbrough, loan ended), Antoine Sibierski (released); Henri Camara (released)
Wolverhampton Wanderers
What they need It is more a case of adding strength in depth rather than bringing in players to go straight into the starting XI. With Chris Iwelumo out until the end of September after breaking a metatarsal in pre-season, Mick McCarthy would like to recruit another striker, ideally a target man, to compete with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Kevin Doyle upfront.
Possible targets McCarthy could turn to Marlon Harewood, who spent a spell on loan at Molineux last season and will be allowed to leave Aston Villa for £1.5m. The Wolves manager has also monitored the Rapid Vienna forward Stefan Maierhofer, who he will have a chance to run the rule over again tomorrow night when the Austrian club take on Villa in the Europa League.
Likelihood of buying: 3/10 Having made seven signings this summer, including the club-record £6.5m that was spent on Kevin Doyle, Wolves are not one of those clubs frantically trying to bring in new faces before the transfer window closes. Nonetheless, Steve Morgan, the Wolves chairman, would probably back McCarthy if the right player emerges. SJ
In: Ronald Zubar (Marseille, £1.5m), Greg Halford (Sunderland, £2m), Nenad Milijas (Red Star, £2.7m), Marcus Hahnemann (Reading, free), Andrew Surman (Southampton, £1.2m), Kevin Doyle (Reading, £6.5m), Ronald Zubar (Marseilles, £2.7m), Michael Mancienne (Chelsea, loan).
Out: Lewis Gobern (MK Dons, free), Darren Potter (Sheffield Wednesday, undisclosed), Stephen Gleeson (MK Dons, undisclosed), Elliott Bennett (Brighton, undisclosed), George Friend (Millwall, loan), Jason Shackell (Doncaster, loan)
