And with that, my race is run. I’ll be back for more tomorrow, bye!
Here’s Barney Ronay on Paris Saint-Germain 4-2 Barcelona:
Fire, noise, fury, a sense of empty energy. And across town, a football match too.
Do any of these randomly pitched autumnal Champions League fixtures mean anything? Probably not when you’re Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, and the only game in town is risk-free TV income and a semi-guaranteed place in the knockout stuff.
But this was still a dazzling occasion at the Parc des Princes as the champions of France and Spain played out a light, open, frictionless, exhibition-style game of football. PSG finished 4-2 winners, having been pegged back to 2-2 at one stage. But this was also a game where the score almost didn’t seem to matter at times, and where the only really hard message was the frailty of the Barcelona backline and PSG’s thrilling attacking energy in these midweek A-games.

Enzo Maresca talks Man City 5-1 AEK Athens:
I think it was a complete performance. It was not easy, especially after the PSG game. We had two games, Ipswich and today, that we needed to win. We did our job. We conceded a goal in transition that probably we could make something better in that situation, but we scored five and probably could have scored more. Some of the players were not playing many minutes, they were ready and that is important. It’s the best feeling for any manager, when you make many changes but at the end the performance is good, so happy for that.
[Foden’s form] is good news for me, because he’s doing well and this is what we want. Happy for him, but also happy for the team that we have one more weapon we can use. We had three players from the academy who made their debuts tonight. It’s nice news for the academy and we are happy for that.
Rio Ngumoha has a chat about Liverpool’s win over Villarreal, and his two assists:
Without the team playing well I wouldn’t have played well. Individually I enjoyed myself tonight, so that’s good. As I get older, affecting games is really important. Today to get two assists and help the team get three points, there’s nothing more I can ask for. At half-time the gaffer was just saying to keep the mentality there and keep fighting.
Watching some of the highlights of the night, and Phil Foden’s finish for his second goal just gets more ridiculous the more times you see it and the slower the motion it’s shown in. Rico Lewis set it up, and this is what he’s got to say about the evening:
Even though we had the win against Ipswich we wanted to put it right in this competition [after losing to PSG last week]. Today we’ve put our stamp down, got the goals and ultimately the three points. The one thing I can say is, everything’s clear. Everyone knows the idea. And when everyone knows the idea it makes everything 10 times easier. Everything’s going smooth right now. It helps when you’re two, three goals up because you relax, and then you can see we’re playing free-flowing and happy football.
And here’s Andy Hunter on Liverpool’s 4-3 win over Villarreal:
Andoni Iraola and Iñigo Pérez parked their long and close friendship in the buildup to the Champions League duel between two old Athletic Bilbao teammates. They will have a humdinger of a contest to dissect when communications are restored. Liverpool, driven by Alexis Mac Allister and ignited by Rio Ngumoha, recovered from two goals down against Villarreal to maintain their 100% record in the competition in emphatic style.
Mac Allister struck twice as Liverpool fought back from a tepid start to record a third successive win in all competitions. They were given a scare when Tani Oluwaseyi volleyed in a late third for Villarreal but were well deserving of their latest impressive result.
Much more here:
Will Unwin has filed his match report from the Etihad:
Enzo Maresca has called for Manchester City to make their own noise on the pitch to drown out the cacophony surrounding them but maybe a quiet night at the Etihad Stadium was what they needed all along. AEK Athens were easily dispatched in a businesslike manner, as Phil Foden announced his return to form with a hat-trick to get City’s Champions League campaign back on track after being pummelled by Paris Saint-Germain.
The match was uneven throughout as Foden shone on the wing and later down the middle, with goals from Elliot Anderson and Rayan Cherki helping to ease City to victory in front of half-full stands. Stavros Pilios’s consolation was more a reward for the boisterous fans in yellow and black than for the overall efforts of the visitors.

Final score: Paris Saint-Germain 4-2 Barcelona
It’s all over in Paris, and the PSG juggernaut rumbles scarily on! Six goals, and there could have been many more, on a gripping night, but nobody can stop PSG right now.
GOAL! It’s Napoli 4-3 Bodo/Glimt! And that’s how it ends! The ball is chipped into the box, headed into the bar, and turned in by Sondre Brunstad Fet!
Only two Champions League games remain in progress, and they’re both currently 4-2 to the home team. In Naples they’re in the last of four added minutes, in Paris the first of three.
Final score: Manchester City 5-1 AEK Athens
The final whistle blows in Manchester, where City have cantered to another comfortable win thanks (in part) to Phil Foden’s hat-trick.
GOAL! Paris Saint-Germain 4-2 Barcelona (Fabian Ruiz, 86 mins)
And that is surely that! Hakimi spears the ball across goal from the right, and Fabian Ruiz is unmarked at the far post as he turns it in!
Updated
GOAL! Napoli 4-2 Bodo/Glimt! And that is a complete mess. Bodo should have cleared that easily, but instead Giovane robbs Sjovold on the Napoli left, runs infield and from nearly on the byline sends in a low cross which is deflected into the net by a desperate defender!
More drama at Anfield, where Tani Oluwaseyi has scored the Spaniards’ third and it’s now Liverpool 4-3 Villarreal and back on a knife-edge!
GOAL! Paris Saint-Germain 3-2 Barcelona (Vitinha, 81 mins)
And two minutes later PSG lead once more! A cross from the right is headed out to Vitinha, 25 yards out, and he chests it down, lets it bounce, and then volleys hard and low past Joan Garcia!
Updated
GOAL! Paris Saint-Germain 2-2 Barcelona (Lamine Yamal, 79 mins)
That is a beautifully taken goal! Zaire-Emery tries to cut out a lofted pass to Lamine Yamal but only gets his eyebrows to it, and Yamal – latest custodian of the captain’s armband for Barcelona – runs onto it, gets into the area and lifts the ball into the roof of the net from a silly angle!
Liverpool meanwhile have scored twice in four second-half minutes to take a 4-2 lead over Villarreal, with Florian Wirtz getting the fourth. They have only ever come from two down to win once before in the Champions League – and that was also against Villarreal!
And the third of the right-wing-cross-created goals comes in Naples, where Politano – scorer of the first goal – chips the ball into the box with his left foot, and Scott McTominay – scorer of the second and now also the third – meets it with an excellent header. It’s Napoli 3-2 Bodo/Glimt!
GOAL! Manchester City 5-1 AEK Athens (Foden, 76 mins)
Phil Foden completes his hat-trick in Manchester! McAidoo crosses low from the right, and Foden just has to turn it in from the six-yard line!
Updated
GOAL! Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 Barcelona (Hernandez, 72 mins)
A corner from the right, Lucas Hernandez outjumps Anthony Gordon, and he sends the ball into the top corner – one of three goals from right-wing crosses across the continent in the space of about 45 seconds!
Updated
Now they hit the post! Hakimi slides the ball across from the right, and Ferran Torres’ sidefoots into the base of the stanchion!
A really good chance for PSG, but Doue overhits his pass to Ferran Torres and the moment passes.
PSG have brought on Akliouche for Kvaratskhelia, and Zabarnyi for Marquinhos. “I’m watching PSG vs Barcelona,” writes Michael Meagher. “Marquinhos was wearing black boots. I didn’t know they even made them anymore …”
More big-name injury news from Paris, where Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has now been helped off.
GOAL! Manchester City 4-1 AEK (Foden, 65 mins)
That’s a nice goal, and a ludicrous finish! The ball is lifted into the penalty area – no pressure on the ball, and a ridiculously deep back-line – Lewis cushions it back into the path of Foden, and he half-volleys right into the top corner, off the inside of the post!
Updated
GOAL! It’s Napoli 2-2 Bodo/Glimt! Andreas Helmersen levels for Bodo/Glimt with a nice enough, and very precise, shot but that was just too easy!
Red card! Atletico Madrid’s Morten Hjulmand catches Stiller’s ankle from behind, and it’s an early bath for him!
GOAL! PSG 1-1 Barcelona (Xavi Espart, 55 mins)
Barcelona’s right-back brings the scores level! He passes infield to Fermin Lopez, inside his own half, spots space opening up in front of him and sprints into it. Lopez spots him – hard not to, given how bright the Barcelona kit is – and picks the pass, and Xavi Espart runs into the area and puts his laces through it, giving Safonov no chance!
Updated
GOAL! Manchester City 3-1 AEK (Cherki, 57 mins)
That is coolly done! The ball is played across the edge of the area from the right to Rayan Cherki, running onto it on his right foot. He lets it run across him and shifts onto his left, Arriaga is completely befuddled by it, and he uses his new-found space to slam a shot past Brignoli!
Updated
And it’s 4-0! The keeper goes the right way, but the ball goes the right way quicker. And the deadlock is broken at Porto! It’s a scuffed shot from Miljnans on the right of goal, which was going wide until Guus Til turned it in, and it’s Porto 0-1 PSV!
And now a penalty for Roma! Wesley Franca is fouled in the box, and Malen has grabbed the ball …
There’s been a third for Roma at home to Slovan Bratislava! It’s a bit of a mess, with Barseghyan losing the ball as he tried to shepherd it out of play, leading to a brief outbreak of penalty-area ping-pong that ends with Pisilli hammering it into the roof of the net.
GOAL! Manchester City 2-1 AEK Athens (Pilios, 52 mins)
Game on! AEK have put together a couple of decent attacks in the second half and this time they’re rewarded! Stavros Pilios is in all sorts of space as he runs onto a ball infield from the left, carries it into the box, and slides a low shot past Donnarumma that nestles inside the far post!
Updated
Atletico Madrid equalise within two minutes of the restart! Julian Alvarez has the goal, finding the toppest of bins from Ademola Lookman’s pass infield from the left.
Peeeeep! Manchester City kick off the second half!
Half-time scores

Gillingham 1-0 Port Vale (8pm)
Northampton 0-1 Tranmere
Rochdale 1-0 Grimsby
Rotherham 2-1 Newport
Walsall 2-0 Oldham
York 0-0 Accrington
The half-time whistle has gone in many of tonight’s games, but they’re still going in Paris, in the second of three minutes of stoppage time.
Big change at Anfield! It’s half-time there and Liverpool have pulled it back to 2-2, Ronald Araujo equalising deep into first-half stoppage time. Scott Murray is watching this one here:
Napoli are back in front, thanks to a nice pass from Kevin de Bruyne and a deflected shot from Scott McTominay. It’s Napoli 2-1 Bodo/Glimt now.
Oooo0f! Fermin Lopes has a chance for Barcelona, the keeper saves it, and then the Spaniard tries to volley in the loose ball but connects only with Pacho’s head! VAR checks for a possible red card but does not recommend one – it was a genuine attempt to play the ball. Pacho continues, after some medical attention.
GOAL! Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 Barcelona (Doue, 38 mins)
Lamine Yamal, favourite to win the Ballon d’Or next week, makes the difference in Paris … by giving the ball away deep inside his own half! It’s headed down to Doue, who buries his shot from the edge of the area, with Joan Garcia potentially unsighted by all the defenders ineffectively standing in front of him!
Updated
And a second goal for Roma! Malen carries the ball into the area from the left, checks onto his right foot and scuffs a shot towards the far post which dribbles just too far away from Takac for the Bratislava keeper to both save and hold – and Nahuel Molina buries the rebound.
Updated
Jamie Leweling gives Stuttgart the lead at home to Atletico, with a left-footed shot from just outside the area which didn’t look particularly cleanly struck but was precise enough to zing past Oblak, assisted by a deflection off Hjulmand.
GOAL! Manchester City 2-0 AEK Athens (Foden, 34 mins)
Manchester City are also in the lead-doubling business, Foden cutting infield from the right, passing into the path of Lewis, collecting a smart return pass and hammering into the roof of the net!
Updated
GOAL! Liverpool 0-2 Villarreal (Cardona, 29 mins)
The stats suggest that the two teams at Anfield are very well matched, but the scoreline does not – it’s 2-0 now, and Sergi Cardona has doubled the Spanish side’s lead. And there has also been a goal in Naples, where Bodo/Glimt have equalised thanks to Jens Petter Hauge’s lovely, precise finish.
How are PSG not ahead now? Three or four great chances in quick succession are blocked by flying defenders or goalkeepers, each miss less likely than the last.
Meanwhile the physios are back on in Paris, this time to deal with an issue with Olmo, and he too is going to be forced off.
Save! The ball is nodded by Joao Neves into the path of Ferran Torres, who came on for Dembele a few minutes ago for PSG, but he scuffs his attempted finish into Joan Garcia.
Roma take the lead against Slovan Bratislava, Mario Hermoso heading in from the goalline, or near enough, after a free-kick from the left was headed back across goal.
Updated
A blow for PSG: Dembele is feeling his right left hamstring and asking to be taken off.
Updated
Barcelona’s Joao Cancelo is booked for not fouling Doue. He certainly threw a leg out and got nowhere near the ball, but Doue leapt over his leg, absolutely no contact being made, before throwing himself to the ground in apparent agony. Book the both of them, I say.
In Paris, Dani Olmo’s 22-yarder swerves just the wrong side of the post. TV cameras find Lenny Kravitz in the crowd. “I don’t know whose way it’s going to go, but I don’t think it’s going to go his way,” we’re told.
GOAL! Manchester City 1-0 AEK Athens (Anderson, 12 mins)
Elliot Anderson scores his first goal for Manchester City, and it couldn’t have been easier! It’s a free-kick from 20 yards or so, which Fernandez sends over the wall, into the bar, off the keeper, and plopping in front of Anderson, who finds an empty net!
Updated
In Paris, it’s looking like it’s going to be a busy night for both goalkeepers. Joan Garcia has been repeatedly tested from distance, while Safonov in the PSG goal has just had a bit of work to do, most recently catching Cubarsi’s header on goal.
But there have been goals in Naples, where Matteo Politano has volleyed Napoli into a first-minute lead against Bodo/Glimt, and at Anfield, where Georges Mikautadze has latched onto a Van Dijk back-header to put Villarreal ahead!
Updated
PSG hit the post with less than two minutes on the clock! It’s Kvaratskhelia with the shot from 20 yards or so, and the ball rebounds off the woodwork straight to Dembele, who a) embarrassingly completely misses the target, and not by a small margin, and b) is offside.
Peeeeeeeeep! The games have begun! Except for the one in Paris, which is running late.
These are the final moments of pre-match precursive preambulation, with kick-off moments away. “Now, I’m just reading what you’ve written and I don’t know what it looks like, but this might be the week to avoid excessive displays of fire in the French capital, don’t you think?” writes Jason Geer. Rest assured, t looked like the very opposite of chaos.
Teams are gathering in tunnels. In Paris, a very fancy light-and-fire display has begun.
Enzo Maresca says Haaland was left out “just to manage his minutes … and also from the last game he had some small problem. It’s just a mix of different things.”
The Barcelona dressing room certainly has no hors d’oeuvres to be seen, just some small and unpromising plastic containers. PSG are not only top of the table, they also have a top table.
Meanwhile, the Atletico Madrid changing room in Stuttgart features one small table and some bananas.
A peek inside Paris Saint-Germain’s dressing-room and their pre-match snack lineup. Fruit, for sure, but then a variety of finger food. French sides, by law*, must offer an array of hors d’oeuvres.
* Potentially not factual
So Erling Haaland is fit enough only for the Manchester City bench, with Enzo Maresca making eight changes to the team that beat Ipswich on Saturday. The most eye-catching pick is 17-year-old midfielder Floyd Samba, son of former Blackburn and QPR centre-back Christopher.

Preamble
Hello world! Another busy night lies ahead in Europe and in the English Football League, with much attention destined to be focused on Paris, scene in recent days of violence and looting but host tonight of one of the prestige fixtures of the group stage as the teams sitting first and second in the nascent table after two fixtures, five-time champions Barcelona and double reigning champions Paris Saint Germain, meet at the Parc des Princes.
Manchester City, meanwhile, may be without Erling Haaland for the visit of AEK Athens, who are promising not to go all-out defensive for a trip to a side Marko Nikolic, the Greek side’s Serbian coach, described as “one of the best teams in the world of football”. “We must bring our identity, not change much and be strong on the pitch,” he said. “If you change and go defensive and try only to survive, it will not work. We have to stick to the challenge. We want to do it with our game. We can be a decent opponent for everybody. I have a lot of confidence in our team.” You can get a decent idea of how much any kind of good result would mean to AEK by the scenes of jubilatory bedlam that greeted yesterday’s 1-1 draw in the Uefa Youth League.
Beyond the best two teams in the tournament so far tonight also sees the worst, in the shape of Slovan Bratislava, who visit Roma. Slovan, who last failed to win the Slovakian title in 2018, are currently fourth in their domestic league but their position at the bottom of this table is largely down to them having had the misfortune to come up against PSG, who thumped them 6-1, a goal difference hit from which they are yet to recover.
