England's evolution in key games since they became world champions.

World Cup final 22 Nov 2003
bt Australia 20-17 (Sydney)

15 Josh Lewsey 14 Jason Robinson 13 Will Greenwood 12 Mike Tindall 11 Ben Cohen 10 Jonny Wilkinson 9 Matt Dawson 1 Trevor Woodman 2 Steve Thompson 3 Phil Vickery 4 Martin Johnson (capt) 5 Ben Kay 6 Richard Hill 7 Neil Back 8 Lawrence Dallaglio

Subs: Dorian West, Jason Leonard, Martin Corry, Lewis Moody, Kyran Bracken, Mike Catt, Iain Balshaw

A settled side, the prop Woodman - the last man in - at the end of that year's Grand Slam. Telling uncertainty over full-back, though, where Lewsey and Robinson switched.

1st game as world champions, 15 February 2004
bt Italy 50-9 (Rome)

15 Iain Balshaw 14 Josh Lewsey 13 Will Greenwood 12 Jason Robinson 11 Ben Cohen 10 Paul Grayson 9 Andy Gomarsall 1 Trevor Woodman 2 Steve Thompson 3 Phil Vickery 4 Danny Grewcock 5 Ben Kay 6 Joe Worsley 7 Richard Hill 8 Lawrence Dallaglio (capt)

Subs: Mark Regan, Jason Leonard, Simon Shaw, Chris Jones, Matt Dawson, Olly Barkley, Henry Paul

First match as world champions. Won 50-9 but looked rusty, with a new full-back and Grayson, an old fly-half, in for the injured Wilkinson. And, of course, no Johnno.

Woodward's last Test, 26 June 2004
lost to Australia 51-15 (Brisbane)

15 Josh Lewsey 14 Tom Voyce 13 Mike Catt 12 Mike Tindall 11 Ben Cohen 10 Charlie Hodgson 9 Andy Gomarsall 1 Tim Payne 2 Mark Regan 3 Julian White 4 Simon Shaw 5 Steve Borthwick 6 Joe Worsley 7 Richard Hill 8 Lawrence Dallaglio (capt)

Subs: Steve Thompson, Mike Worsley, Martin Corry, Michael Lipman, Matt Dawson, Fraser Waters, Olly Barkley

A disastrous display - blasted 51-15 in Brisbane. A first recall for Catt, who seemed a bit old even then, and another trial for Hodgson at fly-half. Tellingly, Richard Hill, the only man never dropped by Clive Woodward, hasn't played for England since.

Robinson's first big game, 20 Nov 2004
bt South Africa 32-16 (Twickenham)

15 Jason Robinson (capt) 14 Mark Cueto 13 Henry Paul 12 Mike Tindall 11 Josh Lewsey 10 Charlie Hodgson 9 Andy Gomarsall 1 Graham Rowntree 2 Steve Thompson 3 Julian White 4 Danny Grewcock 5 Steve Borthwick 6 Joe Worsley 7 Lewis Moody 8 Martin Corry

Subs: Andy Titterrell, Andrew Sheridan, Ben Kay, Andy Hazell, Harry Ellis, Will Greenwood, Ben Cohen

A good start for Andy Robinson, a 32-16 win featuring fine displays from Hodgson and Corry. The Henry Paul experiment: a league legend shoehorned into the side. Sound familiar?

Robinson's near miss, 19 Nov 2005
lost 23-19 to New Zealand (Twickenham)

15 Josh Lewsey 14 Mark Cueto 13 Jamie Noon 12 Mike Tindall 11 Ben Cohen 10 Charlie Hodgson 9 Matt Dawson 1 Andrew Sheridan 2 Steve Thompson 3 Phil Vickery 4 Steve Borthwick 5 Danny Grewcock 6 Pat Sanderson 7 Lewis Moody 8 Martin Corry (capt)

Beaten 23-19, should have won. Notable for the emergence of Sheridan at loose-head and signs of damaging indecision in the back row, with Dawson creaking at scrum-half. Noon and Tindall were too alike in the centre.

Robinson's last game, 25 Nov 2006
lost 25-14 to South Africa (Twickenham)

15 Josh Lewsey 14 Mark Cueto 13 Mathew Tait 12 Jamie Noon 11 Ben Cohen 10 Andy Goode 9 Peter Richards 1 Phil Vickery 2 Lee Mears 3 Julian White 4 Tom Palmer 5 Chris Jones 6 Joe Worsley 7 Pat Sanderson 8 Martin Corry (capt)

Defeat to the All Blacks and, worse, Argentina preceded this 25-14 reverse. Note half-back combination (Goode and Richards) with no chance of featuring again, a mix-and-match pack and one of a number of ill-starred centre combinations.

Ashton's first match, 3rd Feb 2007
bt Scotland 42-20 (Twickenham)

15 Olly Morgan 14 Josh Lewsey 13 Mike Tindall 12 Andy Farrell 11 Jason Robinson 10 Jonny Wilkinson 9 Harry Ellis 1 Perry Freshwater 2 George Chuter 3 Phil Vickery (capt) 4 Louis Deacon 5 Danny Grewcock 6 Joe Worsley 7 Magnus Lund 8 Martin Corry

Subs: Lee Mears, Julian White, Tom Palmer, Tom Rees, Peter Richards, Toby Flood, Mathew Tait.

Yet another full-back (who ended up crocked) and at No12 a big name - in rugby league. Wilkinson finally came back and the Scots were routed 42-20 but his scrum-half, Ellis, was soon injured too.

Ashton's last warm-up
18 Aug 2007, lost 22-9 to France (Marseille)

15 Mark Cueto 14 Josh Lewsey 13 Dan Hipkiss 12 Andy Farrell 11 Jason Robinson 10 Jonny Wilkinson 9 Shaun Perry 1 Perry Freshwater 2 Mark Regan 3 Phil Vickery (capt) 4 Simon Shaw 5 Steve Borthwick 6 Martin Corry 7 Tom Rees 8 Nick Easter

Subs: Lee Mears, Matt Stevens, Joe Worsley, Lawrence Dallaglio, Andy Gomarsall, Olly Barkley, Paul Sackey

Beaten 22-9. Hipkiss won a second cap and Cueto, a wing, tried out at full-back. Easter and Perry were in no one's plans a year ago. Nor were Regan and Rees. All a bit ad hoc with the clock ticking down.
